Blowouts have become the norm in the elementary girls 5-6 grade league, so it came as no surprise when Dibrell and Warren County Middle School won by double figures in their games Thursday night.
The Dibrell Lady Wildcats moved to 5-0 this season with a 37-11 win over Centertown while Warren County made its move into a third-place tie with Irving College in the standings with a 35-20 beating of Boyd.
Dibrell has made it a habit of winning big this year as the Lady Wildcats have won their five games by a combined score of 180-44.
Stifling defense has been Dibrell’s calling card this year – having held two opponents to under five points in a game – and it was on display against Centertown Thursday.
The Lady Wildcats built a 24-2 lead going into halftime as the Lady Warriors connected on only one shot in the first half – a layup by Ricki Valenta in the second quarter.
Dibrell didn’t struggle on offense though. Rhealee Johnson scored all 11 of her points in the first half, including sinking a 3-pointer in the second quarter. MaKenna Mason also drilled a 3-pointer in the quarter as it was part of a huge run to start the game.
Kylie Young picked up where Dibrell left off when the second half began. Young had six points in the third quarter, helping Dibrell build its lead to 30 points.
Beth Vaughn countered with a three-point play for the Lady Warriors while Madalyn Stubblefield added a pair of free throws.
Centertown turned the tide on Dibrell in the fourth quarter, holding the home team scoreless the final six minutes. There wasn’t enough time to make a big comeback though as Vaughn and Stubblefield scored baskets in the fourth quarter of the 26-point loss.
Mason finished with eight points for the Lady Wildcats, followed by Calyn Damon and Erica Cantrell with four points apiece. Alora Stuart and Linley Wanamaker added two points each.
Warren County turned to its vaunted scoring duo of Hallie Jo Pennington and Savannah Cox to produce its third win this season. Pennington scored a season-high 19 points while Cox added 10 to help the Lady Pioneers beat Boyd by 15.
Cox did most of her damage in the first half with eight points as Warren County went into halftime leading 18-7. Pennington erupted after the break with 13 points, including scoring all seven of the Lady Pioneers’ points in the third quarter.
Kinsley Lorance chipped in four and Morgan West added two as Warren County improved to 3-2 this year.
Boyd tried to keep pace as Elahanna Kastello tallied 13 points, but the Lady Broncos didn’t have enough fire power to pull the upset.
Alaina Stiles scored five points and Ashley Vandagriff hit two free throws as Boyd fell to 1-4.
