After a tight first quarter of play, Eastside would begin to pull away from Dibrell in the boys 5-6 grade basketball tournament Monday night at Boyd Christian School.
Eastside claimed a 36-29 victory behind a balanced scoring attack that saw five players score at least six points. Charlie Moore led the Bulldogs with eight points.
Bryson Elrod was the top scorer for Dibrell with 10.
After a hectic first quarter, the teams started to settle in and players calmed down. The second quarter would prove to slightly favor the Bulldogs.
It would be Dylan Partain to lead the Bulldogs with four of his six points coming in the second quarter. Dibrell did a slightly better job sharing the ball with three Wildcats scoring before the half trailing the Bulldogs by a score of 13-10.
The Wildcats would have to regroup to overcome the three-point deficit. Three points doesn’t sound like much until you’re playing someone whose defense can shut you down and pressure the ball the entire length of the floor.
Dibrell would explode for 16 points in the third quarter and Bryson Elrod would be responsible for 10 of those. While the Eastside defense would find it hard to match up with Elrod, Alec Hobbs would lead the Bulldogs with four points and Charlie Moore would connect on a 3-point shot for the Bulldogs.
Heading into the fourth down three points, fouls would start to plague the Wildcats. Dibrell’s Jordan Sandlin would become the first Wildcat to be called for his fifth foul. But the fact four other Wildcats would end the game with four fouls had their defense backing off with the worry other key players would exit the game. Fans of the Wildcats would let their feelings be made known to the officials.
With so many key Dibrell players having foul trouble down the stretch it allowed Eastside to push the tempo while trying to draw the contact of the Dibrell defense. Christian Rogers would be perfect from the free-throw line in the final quarter for Eastside.
Plagued by fouls and lack of pressure on the ball would allow Eastside to prevail over Dibrell by a final score of 36-29 in Monday night’s first round of the tournament.
