There was one last chance to beat the Morrison Eagles during regular-season play and it was up to the Eastside Bulldogs to get it done.
Unfortunately for Eastside fans, the Bulldogs couldn’t pull the upset as the Eagles put an exclamation point on an undefeated season with a 47-20 victory Tuesday night in Morrison.
Irving Espinoza led the Eagles scoring a game-high 15 points.
Morrison’s Ethan Smith, who had been quiet in the first half, started to heat up and the Eagles could sense it. Smith and Espinoza combined for eight of the 11 points scored by Morrison in the third. Devin Martin and Ronaldo Martinez added the remaining three points in the quarter.
Eastside would call for timeout to try and slow the momentum from the Eagles, but to no avail. Logan Young and Axel Rodriguez for Eastside would provide the only offense the Bulldogs could muster in the fourth quarter. The pressure by Morrison on the ball was relentless.
Late in the game Eastside appeared to have a fast-break to the basket when Espinoza moved underneath and drew a charge. The call brought the Eastside assistant coach out on the floor and he would be hit with a technical foul that brought the Morrison crowd to its feet.
It was all Morrison in the second half and they would defeat the Bulldogs for the second time this season.
The Eagles started with their run-and-gun style offense but the Bulldogs kept them pretty contained for much of the first quarter and at the end of one the score was locked at eight points each. Bulldog Logan Young and Rodriguez both showed their accuracy early by hitting 3-pointers for Eastside.
The Eagle defense clamped down in the second quarter only allowing Andrew Fults to find a single basket for Eastside. As the two teams went into the locker room to talk it over Morrison had claimed the lead at 16-10.
Morrison knew Eastside was going to make a run to try and reclaim the lead and Logan Young started off behind a huge 3-point basket to cut into the Morrison lead but it was short lived because it was all Morrison after that. Morrison hit the gas pedal to open the second half and did not let up until the final buzzer leaving the Eagles with a perfect record this season.
