Monday was a chance for Warren County High School golfers to test their skills in a driving rainstorm.

In a shortened 9-hole match due to the weather, Lady Pioneer Lauren Slatton finished as the top female golfer and Chase Newby led the way for the Pioneers.

Conditions at McMinnville Country Club were not the least bit ideal with a slight drizzle turning into a soaking downpour about 3 holes into the match.

“This shows we play in all kinds of weather, not just sunny skies,” said WCHS coach J.W. Holt. “We played until the greens started puddling up and there started to be standing water on the course. As hard as it was raining, we probably could have only played for five more minutes, but lightning drove us from the course.”

Slatton shot 40 to finish as the top female golfer by 4 strokes over her next closest competitor from Cookeville. Slatton’s 40 was 3 strokes over par based on the holes she played on the front 9 and back 9.

In boys team competition, the Pioneers shot 178. White County won the three-way match with 160, while Cookeville was second with 162.

Newby was the top golfer for the Pioneers with 40. Sawyer Seymour shot 45, Alec Johnson shot 46, and Colton Krech shot 47.

WCHS is scheduled to play at McMinnville Country Club again on Thursday against Coffee County. Start time is 1 p.m.
