Elijah Smith and Terry Hines each scored twice as Covenant Academy downed United Christian Academy 4-0 Thursday night at home.
The Lions, who are now 2-1, took a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to Smith’s first score. Hines scored twice in rapid succession to the start the second half before Smith added the final goal.
It was a big win for the Lions, especially considering the limited amount of time the team has been able to get on the field early this spring.
“I’m proud of how the team has played. We haven’t been able to get on the field much due to rain,” said coach Chris Madewell. “For us, each game is like a practice. It’s a chance for us to improve.”
Smit Patel picked up a shutout in goal, making key saves to stifle the visiting Mustangs. Alex Stovall was also crucial to preserving the lead, erasing scoring opportunities as the back line of the defense.
Covenant will get a chance to defend its home field again Tuesday against Lancaster Christian Academy. A middle school game will be played at 4:30 p.m. The high school game will follow.
