Covenant Academy had a big night celebrating Senior Night, a 1,000-point milestone, and a team victory over West Academy on Thursday.

Behind a game-high 22 points from Terry Hines, Covenant slipped past West, 61-49.

Ethan Hillis has been out with an injury, but he was a starter for Senior Night. At the beginning of the game, there were many turnovers by both teams and also plenty of scoring.

After a number of blocking fouls were called on both teams, and two charges were called. Covenant’s Luke Campbell made a 3-pointer to make up for the fouls and also made an impressive steal.

Covenant was up at the half, 32-23.

In the third quarter, Covenant senior David Netherton made a shot after retrieving the rebound. The Lions continued to get rebounds and created a ton of turnovers, allowing senior Elijah Smith to score two 3-pointers for Covenant.

West Academy’s Andrew Hasley responded to the impressive scoring by stealing the ball from Smith’s hands. Unfazed, Smith kept up with Hasley down the court.

Ahead by 10 going into the fourth quarter, Covenant was feeling good. It was with a blink of an eye when Hines shot and scored a 3-pointer, and the gym erupted with applause.

It was unexpected since they didn’t applaud as much for his earlier 3-pointer until you saw the student section holding signs with “1,000 point” written on them. Covenant called timeout to celebrate the momentous achievement.

Covenant easily took the game, beating the Thunderbirds 61-49. Emotions of pride and support flooded the gym when the final buzzer went off not just for Hines and his accomplishment, but for the overall night.

Covenant continued to be undefeated in the district on Friday, beating Clarksville Christian, the No. 1 team in the North Division, 68-65. Covenant now stands No. 1 in the South Division.
