The Covenant Academy Lion high school soccer team was in action Thursday night against Riverside Christian Academy. The Lions ultimately lost the game 4-1 to the Knights, but fought hard throughout the game. The Lions were led by Anthony Palmer, who scored the lone goal for the Lions.
“Our defense played well, with the exception of a few times when we let the offense get behind us,” said Covenant coach Chris Madewell. “The team played aggressive and I saw some bright spots from our new players.”
The score remained tight throughout the first half, with each team not allowing anything to go through the net. The Knights scored a goal before the half to grab the lead, 1-0, at the break.
The Lions got caught off guard by the Lions early in the second half, when Palmer scored to tie the game 1-1. Covenant had new life to begin the second half, but that was short-lived.
The Knights scored three unanswered goals in the second half to pull away from the Lions, and win the game 4-1. The Lions fell to 0-1 on the season in a game where they seemed much improved.
“Our offense is our strong point this year with many returning players,” said Madewell. “We had several shots on goal and I feel like we can do a better job at creating more scoring opportunities. Overall we showed much improvement over a team that dominated us last year and we had an opportunity to win the game.”
