Top finishers in the disc golf tournament youth division were second place Andrew Matthews, left, and first place Zachary Perry.

McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department held its first Barren Fork Dam tournament.

Disc golfer Alex Welcome won the Open Division, the highest division in the tournament.

“I was very happy to win this first tournament,” said Welcome. “I am just glad to see disc golf grow in McMinnville. “I believe we had close to 20 players at the tournament, which is easily the largest group of disc golfers that we have ever had at the course.”

Welcome is a member of McMinnville Disc Golf Club and has been playing since early 2017.

The event was held at Pepper Branch Park on its newly renovated course.

“Until recently, players had to travel out of town to get to a decent disc golf course, but the improvements that McMinnville Parks and Recreation has made to the course allows us to have a good course close to home,” said Welcome. “I’m excited to see the sport continue to grow in McMinnville.”

Coming in second place was Chris Matthews.

The Rec Division was taken by Tyler Klasek. Coming in second was Cody Stewart.

One point separated the top winners in the final division. Zachary Perry beat out Andrew Matthews for the top spot in the Youth Division.

McMinnville Parks and Recreation has scheduled a Chase the Ace tournament, a hole-in-one disc golf competition, for July 6. Preregistration is required.
