Centertown rarely rebuilds when it comes to Warren County girls elementary basketball. The Lady Warriors just reload.
Centertown claimed early bragging rights in District 2 last week, winning the preseason tournament held at Dibrell. The Lady Warriors won the championship game 24-13 over Morrison, concluding a 2-0 week as the group cemented itself as the early favorite for a potential county championship in the winter.
The Lady Warriors earned their way into the finals with a dominant 40-2 win over Dibrell in the semifinals. Aubrey Alford led the way in the first win, scoring 16 points.
Ansley Pepper emerged as the star in the finals, tallying 10 points as the Lady Warriors got rolling early and led wire-to-wire over Morrison.
The Lady Eagles were also coming into the finals after demolishing Eastside 38-0 in the semifinals. Ella Pennywell and Kealah Young had 10 points each in the win over the Lady Bulldogs, but it was tougher for the talented young scorers for Morrison to shake loose against Centertown in the finals.
Pennywell led Morrison with five points, all coming in the first half, while Young tallied four after the break. Willow Kennerly and Addison Allen added two points each for the Lady Eagles.
Pepper helped spot Centertown an 11-4 advantage in the first quarter by outscoring Morrison on her own. The talented forward was able to put her head down and get to the basket against Morrison, securing six early points to get Centertown rolling.
Tenlee Medley added three early points, while Willa Denning got a basket in the first quarter on her way to a six-point night.
Alford added four points in the finals - all in the second quarter - while Lyvia Wilson sank a fourth-quarter free throw to make sure the Lady Warriors lifted the championship trophy at the end of the night.
In the consolation game, Dibrell was able to get by Eastside 19-15 behind a 17-point outburst from Anniston Page.
