Centertown earns win over Eastside

A game between the Centertown and Eastside girls came down to who wanted it more Tuesday night.
A 27-24 win was decided after an explosive 15-point fourth quarter propelled the Lady Warriors into the lead as time expired.
Centertown had two players reach double digits. Jayden Smartt and Katy Mae Cantrell led all scorers with 12 points each in the narrow win over Eastside.
Centertown trailed at the end of the third quarter, 16-12. Centertown started the fourth and pressured the Lady Bulldogs with an unmatched intensity.
Smartt, who scored a total of four points the three previous quarters combined, struck early and often in the fourth. She dropped in eight points in the final quarter and went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Cantrell added four more and Madison Hollis scored her only three points in the fourth.
Eastside’s Shelby Smartt collected six points in the fourth and was not able to withstand the defensive pressure and carry the offense on her own. Madelyn Powers added two points as time ticked off the clock. It was not enough to keep the Lady Bulldogs in the lead and Eastside was defeated by a final score of 27-24 at home by a Lady Warrior defense that smothered the Lady Bulldogs down the stretch.
In the first quarter, neither team came out and set the tone. Eastside gained a slight advantage, 4-2.
Centertown pushed the tempo in the second quarter and the Lady Warrior defense allowed them to claim the lead. Centertown played an aggressive all-out pressure defense much of the second quarter and the Lady Bulldogs were stifled. Jayden Smartt and Cantrell started to work inside the Eastside defense and their effort helped push the Lady Warriors into the lead at the halftime, 8-6.
Eastside came out of the halftime break with a renewed intensity. An Eastside team that just posted two points in the previous quarter jumped all over the Lady Warriors and exploded for 10 in the third.
Savannah Winfree led the offensive attack for Eastside with six points and helped to reclaim the lead for her team. Her sister, Sable Winfree, added two points in the effort to reclaim the lead.
Cantrell supplied the only four points for Centertown in the third quarter.
