Centertown and Locust Street knew they were the only women’s teams that would take the field Monday night at Warren County Fairgrounds. Centertown made sure they wouldn’t have to be running in the mud long.
Playing a postponed game from last Thursday on a rain-soaked field, Centertown crushed Locust Street 19-4.
Monday’s game was played due to a rain-out last Thursday, but the fields were soaked once again when the two teams tried to complete their game four days later. Centertown didn’t seem bothered by the conditions though as the team used an 11-run fourth inning to win with ease.
Centertown led 5-4 when the fourth inning began, but would hold a commanding 12-run lead by the time the inning ended.
Lead-off batter Nadine Winfree got the rally started with a single. Shawna Judkins followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position for Danielle Miller. Miller responded with a two-run single, starting a scoring surge which would last awhile.
Emily Lopez, Heather Wilson and Melissa Young would follow with RBI singles before walks started. Kristy Sparkman, Judkins and Miller would all draw free passes that would load the bases for Sarah Roller as the lead swelled to 13-4. Roller made it a 12-run game with one swing of the bat as she drove in three runners with a double.
Locust Street would go scoreless in the bottom of the frame, giving Centertown a chance to finish off the game in the fifth. Sparkman and Miller added run-scoring singles in the fifth inning that pushed the advantage to 15, where it would stay as the game ended by run rule moments later.
Peytan Hall kept Locust Street from going out in order in the bottom of the fifth as she hit a two-out single, but Haley Muncey was retired right after to end the game.
Miller finished with four hits to pace Centertown. Judkins, Sullens and Roller added three hits apiece.
Hall and Sera Reyes finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece for Locust Street. Muncey, Abbi Reyes, Camerie Martin, Krista Wells and Kim Holmes added one hit each.
The regular season for Church League women’s leagues ends Thursday night. Tournament action will start Tuesday, July 30.
