After a disappointing road loss to DeKalb County last week, the Boyd Broncos continued their road trip Monday night and visited the Minutemen of Franklin Road Christian School in Murfreesboro.
Boyd led in all four quarters and the Broncos defeated the Minutemen, 53-40.
Boyd’s Trey Cantrell scored nine of his 15 points in the first quarter. He connected on a 3-pointer and drove to the basket for six more points. Boyd enjoyed a second 3-pointer and layup from big man Tyler Beaty. A pair of layups from Isaiah Blanton and another from Blaine Wilson extended the Bronco lead.
The Boyd defense stifled the Minutemen for the first eight minutes and Boyd enjoyed a 20-4 first-quarter lead.
Blanton accepted the scoring load in the second quarter. He scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in every way possible. Blanton hit a 3-pointer, drove the lane, got putbacks, and hit a pair of free throws. Tyler Pomales added a 3-pointer of his and the Broncos took a very comfortable 34-11 lead into the break.
With a 23-point lead at the half, head coach Lucas Majors rested some players. Franklin Christian stepped up its defense and pressured the ball and attempted a rally that held Boyd to just six points in the third quarter while the Minutemen were able to put up 10.
Headed into the fourth Boyd still held a comfortable 40-21 lead, however Franklin Christian still rode the momentum they had built in the third quarter while Boyd still rested its high scorers.
With nearly three minutes to go in the game, the Minutemen climbed all the way back to within 11 points, down 40-29. Coach Majors had seen enough and reinserted Cantrell, Beaty, and Blanton and they immediately took over and shut down Franklin Christian’s scoring and expanded the Boyd lead.
When the final buzzer sounded, Boyd left the gym with a 53-40 conference win. Boyd is currently 2-1 in conference with its only conference loss being to Lighthouse Christian Academy. The Broncos’ overall record is 2-2 with an out-of-conference loss to DeKalb County.
Boyd continues its road trip Friday night, traveling to Franklin and take on Riverside Christian Academy.
