Perhaps all the Broncos needed to find their true potential this season was make it to the postseason. Boyd showed new life in the TSIAA Division 2 state tournament last week, beating Lighthouse Christian 57-30 and Academy of G.O.D. 64-37.

Boyd made it all the way to the finals Saturday, where it faced Dickson Christian for the championship. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Broncos faced their share of struggles in the season, but found some momentum by sweeping TSIAA foe Riverside in the final month. The momentum stayed with the team into the state tournament and first-year coach Jayden Reno can see the team starting to gel at the perfect time.

"It's been good this week. We've finally fixed some of the things we have really been focusing on since the new year," said Reno. "Chemistry is looking better than ever and the boys are just really clicking at the tail end of the season. Coach (Trey) Cantrell and I area really enjoying seeing the leadership stepping up also."

Senior Jordan Perry has been on a scoring tear in the state tourney, notching a career-best 38 points against Lighthouse at home before pouring in 28 points in the road win against Academy of G.O.D. Thursday.

It's been far from a one-man show though. Connor Andrews (10 points in Thursday's triumph) is controlling the tempo and offense, Jack Rhoton (three 3-pointers in the wins) continues to stretch the court offensively and Jace Matheney, Weston Wright and Jaxon Grissom have embraced doing the dirty work in the paint. Add in guards Bryant Ralph and Kaden Jones giving the Broncos solid minutes and freshman post Jordin Mitchell making his return from an ankle injury Thursday and the Broncos are building a basis that Reno hopes can continue this season and beyond.

"I think this is the beginning of setting the expectations of our program. Obviously we have things to improve on - like every team - but we see the boys buying into the culture we are trying to set here at Boyd," said Reno. "Playing in the division championship is a good start, but we still have things we want to accomplish."

The Broncos are scheduled to finish their season competing in the NACA tournament March 6-8.
