Using a big run out of the gates, the Boyd Broncos had little trouble dispatching the Middle Tennessee Heat in the opening round of the MTAC tournament at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium Thursday night.Boyd outscored the Heat 24-5 in the first quarter while cruising to a 56-42 victory – its 22nd of the season and second in a 10-day span against the home-school team from the Murfreesboro area.Edgar Morales scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter while leading the Broncos to a huge advantage. The Heat had no answer for the junior forward as he scored the game’s opening basket between a double team and went on to add three more baskets in the period. Logan Martin came off the bench to net eight points in the first quarter while Taven Newport and Christian Barrett knocked down 3-pointers during the spurt that put Boyd ahead 19 after only eight minutes of play.Boyd coach Chris Sullens used the big lead to experiment with his bench, along with save his team’s legs for the semifinals set to be played the following night.
