Sam Page takes the ball strong to the basket for Boyd Christian in third-quarter action Friday against Franklin Classical.

Boyd received 33 points from Christian Rogers and highlight plays from Sam Page and Jake Jones, but the Broncos couldn’t get past Franklin Classical in high school basketball action Friday night.

Franklin Classical came to McMinnville and left town with a 73-63 victory that was a slugfest down the stretch.

Boyd tied the game entering the fourth, but allowed Franklin Classical to gain some seperation halfway through the final quarter, 61-53. The Broncos showed resiliency, cutting the deficit to 65-61 with one minute left, but Boyd failed to capitalize from the free-throw line to make it a one-possession game.

Page finished with 16 points for Boyd, while Jones added 10.

Franklin Classical has an imposing squad that features towering 6-foot-8 sophomore Josiah Hubbard. The team’s best player is shifty wing Joseph Burckel, who can do it all. Burckel is a 3-point threat with the ability to drive to the basket and finish contested shots. He was also a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line in finishing with a game-high 37.

Boyd was determined to attack from the inside and fed the ball to Rogers in the post. He was highly effective and rarely denied when he caught the ball on the block.

Rogers was even effective against a packed-in Franklin Classical zone defense that collapsed on him when he caught the ball. That defense gave Boyd an abundance of open perimeter jumpers, but the Broncos weren’t able to make enough of those open shots.

Boyd played with spunk and was in position to win in the final minute. The Broncos had a chance to cut the lead to 3 points with :20 left when a 3-point shooter was fouled, but he only made 1 of the 3 foul shots.

The Broncos then made a backcourt steal and were fouled going to the hoop, but only made 1 of 2 free throws to allow Franklin Classical to maintain a 67-63 lead with :16 left. Had the Broncos converted all 5 of those foul shots, they would have been down by just 1 point.

Franklin Classical scored the final 6 points on foul shots and a late steal to win 73-63.
