Agonizing ties and demoralizing defeats had been the story for the Lady Pioneers so far this season, but on Monday night it was time for the WCHS soccer team to celebrate.
Behind a three-goal effort from Chloe Wanamaker and two goals and three assists by Addison Steakley, the Lady Pioneers crushed Watertown 6-2. It was the first win for WCHS, which is now 1-6-3 overall.
"It was such a relief for all their hard work to pay off," said coach Kimberly Smith. "The girls have been working hard at practice and improving every game, so this was a much needed win."
Warren County got off to a quick start, notching three goals in the first 20 minutes to take full control. Noelle Bratcher set up Steakley's first goal, pushing a perfect pass through the Purple Tigers' defense and allowing Steakley to bury a shot to make it 1-0.
After getting the Lady Pioneers on the board, Steakley turned to a facilator and her favorite target was the team's leading scorer.
Wanamaker rolled off three straight goals before halftime, two coming off passes from Steakley and the last coming with five minutes left in the first half where she was able to sandwich between three defenders on a loose ball and knock it into the net.
Leading 4-0 at the break, the Lady Pioneers continued to push for goals, leading to Steakley and Bratcher to both find the net in the final 40 minutes and secure a happy night for the Lady Pioneers after so many close calls this season.
"I'm glad we were able to score several goals - I think it will help boost their confidence the rest of the season," said Smith.
Warren County was back in action at Coffee County Tuesday night. See Friday's Standard for more information on the team's road battle with the Red Raiders.
