Walking my way to health

I’ve had a very tiring week. Who knew increasing my physical activity would be so draining. I’ve really kicked it up a notch or two – maybe three notches.
If you are a dedicated reader of my column (there has to be one or two out there), I mentioned recently how Morris Multimedia is offering a competition among its businesses to see which one’s employees can take the most daily average steps from June 1-28. The competition started Monday. Everyone who wanted to participate was given a pedometer. I’ve proudly been wearing mine since Monday morning.
In my previous column, I did mention I would set a goal and attempt to reach that goal every day. I’ve done just that. I guess it’s OK to mention what my daily goal is. I’ve told everyone who asks, so what’s the difference? My goal for each day is 15,000 steps and lose 10 pounds. I added that last goal, even though weight loss isn’t part of the competition. At exactly 15,000 steps, that’s 420,000 steps during the competition. Seems like a rather large goal. I have exceeded my daily goal but I’m not going to tell you by how much.
Like I said, the competition started Monday. I got up at 5:45 Monday morning and walked 8,000 steps before breakfast. Tuesday I walked 9,000 steps before breakfast. Wednesday I walked 10,000 steps before breakfast. Getting in 10,000 steps before breakfast is probably going to be the max. Since Wednesday, I’ve maintain 10,000 steps before breakfast.
By everything I’ve read, walking 10,000 steps per day is supposed to be the healthy, right? My thought process is to get all my healthy out of the way before breakfast and take the rest of the day off. There might be a flaw in my plan. Don’t tell me where it’s at. Let me find it on my own.
On Thursday night, I went home and passed out – after reaching my steps goal, of course. I was feeling a little tired so I put in a movie and lied down at around 8:30 or 9 p.m. I was out before I knew it. I woke up at approximately 2:30 a.m. a little disoriented. My first thought was “Where’s my movie?” The movie I was watching wasn’t the one currently on the TV. When I looked at my cell, approximately six hours had passed. It was wild.
Of course, I got up Friday morning and did 10,000 steps before breakfast so I’m still on track as far as my goal is concerned. The only area I’m not on track is the weight loss. While I haven’t gained any, I’m not losing any. I guess it’s the added exercise but I’ve been hungrier since Monday. I ready need to get that under control if I’m going to reach both goals.
I would like to encourage other companies to hold competitions such as this. If nothing else, it would show your employees that you care about their health.
