I like to give my new year a one-week trial before I start attempting any new resolutions. I think one week gives me enough time to get through all the leftover holiday treats and time off work where I choose to be lazy. On Monday, Jan. 9, I am going to attempt to be a better version of myself. Maybe.
I won’t bore you with the details of my resolution. It’s pretty basic: Be more active, eat something green every now and then that isn’t candy and drink more water. It is the blueprint new year’s resolution. If you think about it, there really isn’t anything special about a new year.
Jan. 1 is not really any different than the day prior, it just feels a little different with the weight of the new year that comes with it. I’ve decided to define my new year with a few quotes I love. First, I heard a quote the other day that I think is really helpful for those wanting to make a change this year, “the million mile journey starts with one step.”
It is a little cheesy, but I think it is helpful. Director Tim Miller said it on a show I was watching and I really liked it. Whatever your goal is, you have to take the first step before you can achieve it, obviously.
Another great quote for the new year is from the movie “Serenity” (this is the movie continuation of the amazing show “Firefly” BTW). In the movie, Jayne says, “If you can’t do something smart, do something right.” I always liked this line from the movie because it doesn’t take anything special to do the right thing. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room to know what the right thing to do is.
One of my favorite quotes is from the show “Angel” (the spinoff of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Angel says, “If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.” It sounds a little backwards, but the way I see it is, in the grand scheme of things, what we do is very insignificant but our choices define us. We make little choices every day that may not seem like they matter when you look at the big picture, but these choices make us who we are. This is also a little cheesy.
Finally, my all-time favorite quote comes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer herself. In season one she says, “Seize the moment, cause tomorrow you might be dead.” I have always loved this line and even had it printed on my graduation invitations much to my mother’s disliking. We don’t know what tomorrow holds. We might as well live each day to the fullest.
My silly little quotes might not apply to everyone’s situations, but I am going to keep them in mind this year. When I am attempting to eat broccoli and drink gallons of water, I will tell myself I am seizing the moment and taking the first step in my million mile journey. On the other hand, I will also tell myself I am seizing the moment when I inevitably eat an entire pan of brownies. Happy new year and good luck to those with resolutions.
