As college students in Tennessee hit the books this fall, their parents (or whoever pays their tuition) are taking another big hit in the pocketbook. The Tennessee Board of Regents has voted to increase tuition and fee rates for the six universities and 13 community colleges it governs. The rates of increase are lower this year than in the recent past, thanks to more state appropriations for higher education.Still, the new rates will rise about 3 percent at the 13 community colleges and range from 1.4 to 6 percent at our six major universities. And that’s just the tip of the cost iceberg, especially for the universities.
