TO THE EDITOR:I wish to address the transgender issue in young children.As many folks from the past few generations recall from their childhood development classes, it is quite common for preschoolers to "decide" they want to be the opposite of their birth sex at some point in their young lives. Primarily, the child wants to identify with an admired, familiar person.Maybe a 3-year-old girl wants to be like her 9-year-old brother because she wants to play baseball like him and to play cars with him."I want to be a boy like Jack," she says.Mom does not wonder if maybe her daughter is a little boy trapped in a girl's body. Mom merely replies, "You were born a girl.
