Samuel  Dickerson Sims, 81, of Rock Island, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7. 

Sam was born Oct. 28, 1937 in Nashville to the late Haskell Dickerson and Jewel (Taylor) Sims of Sparta. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the University of Tennessee. Sam used his agriculture knowledge as a missionary in the Philippines. Sam competed on the cross country team at UT and attended annual reunions with members of this team who called themselves “The Ancients” whose motto was “The older we get the better we were.” Sam earned a master’s in divinity from Emory University and served as an ordained United Methodist Church pastor in the Tennessee Conference.

Sam is survived by his spouse, Charm Miller Sims. His surviving brothers and sisters are Jsane Sims Camp of McMinnville, Susan Sims Hall (Ken) of McMinnville, John Sims (Linda) of Cookeville, and Richard Sims (Jan) of Orillia, Ontario. His stepsons are Bryan Miller (Melinda) of McKinney, Texas, Steve Miller (M’Liss) of Rock Island, and Ken Miller of Richmond, Va. Sam has three grandchildren William, Lauren, and Megan Miller.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of McMinnville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
