McMinnville resident and Warren County native Howard Mayes, 90, was born Jan. 9, 1932 and died Feb. 2 at his residence following a short illness.
A farmer and member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church, he was the son of the late Oscar and Mary Pearson Mayes. He was married on June 29, 1952 to Joice Mayes, who preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 2013. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters Carrie Blanks, Edna Woodlee, Frances Bell, Charlene Smith, and Lucille Blankenship, and brothers Willie and George Mayes.
Mr. Mayes is survived by son and daughter-in-law Kerry and Lindsay Mayes of McMinnville, two grandsons Jake and Will Mayes of McMinnville, sister Betty Walker of McMinnville, sisters-in-law Elaine Mason of Knoxville, and Diane Milstead of McMinnville, several nieces and nephews, shade tree buddies, Uncle Smokey, Newman, Bobby, Harry, Clark, Pa Larry, and Papa Ken, little buddies, Case, Walker, and Landon and all the kids that call him “Grandpa,” and special friends the Yates family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to McMinnville Gideon Camp, Alzheimer’s Association (www.alzTennessee.org), or Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at High’s Chapel with Chris Keele officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Warren County. Visitation will be Sunday from 12 p.m. until time of service at High’s. Online condolences may be made at www.highfuneralhome.com.
