Spencer resident and Van Buren County native Horace “H.V.” Burks, 71, was born March 5, 1943 and died April 30 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga following an extended illness.A retired employee of Carrier Corporation and member of Welchland Baptist Church, he was the son of the late Isaac and Stella Carmack Burks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Burks; granddaughter, Chelsie Smith; grandson, T.J. Burks; brother, Bruce Burks and sister, Jill Barnes.Mr. Burks is survived by son, James M. Burks of Dunlap; daughter, Mealonie Lowry of Morrison; two grandchildren, Cody Allen Smith and Natasha Jade (Brian) Ferrell, both of McMinnville; two great-grandchildren, Memphis Burks and Kaydence Ferrell; four brothers, Kenneth (Anna Sue) Burks of the Centertown community, and Eddie (Betty) Burks, Timmy (Lisa) Burks and Rickey (Lisa) Burks, all of McMinnville; five sisters, Nina (David) Hicks of Manchester, Susie (Richard) Johnson of Dickson, and Judy Capshaw, Teresa (Trent) Campbell and Linda (Steve) McGregor, all of McMinnville, and several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, May 10, in High’s Chapel with William Shockley and Ricky Burks officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at High’s.
