Sparta resident and Detroit, Mich. native Gary Cleveland Newby, 80, was born August 13, 1944 and died November 15, 2024 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center following a short illness.

A self-employed Environmental Contractor, he was the son of the late Ezekiel and Tula Goff Newby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda (Wayne) Caviness and brothers-in-law, Thurman Pedigo and Ralph Pedigo.

Mr. Newby was married Aug. 30, 1968 to Virginia Pedigo Newby of Sparta who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Zeke (Christa) Newby of Mt. Juliet; grandchildren, Haley, Kacie and Waylon; great-grandchild, Saylor Phillips; brother-in-law, Charles Johnson; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelena (Mark) Ashburn and Raynell Pedigo and nieces and nephews, Jim (April) Mason, Bonnie (Charles) Collier, Judy Thomas, George Beaver, Patrick (Carol) Pedigo, Lee Pedigo, Tim (Lise) Pedigo, Jennifer (Tom) Jacobs, Luke (Meagan) Caviness, Jill (Jesse) Caviness, Susan Pedigo (Chris) Edwards and Heather Pedigo.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22 in High’s Chapel with Tim Lewis to officiate. Interment will follow at New Union Cemetery on Hwy. 30. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at High’s.
