Boonton, N.J., native and McMinnville resident Eugene “Gene” Joseph Broda, 79, died Oct. 13 at Kindred Hospital, Dover, N.J., after a courageous battle over the past 40 years with chronic illness.
He was a gentleman to the end never losing his independence, warm smile, and sense of humor.
Born July 18, 1932 in Sugar Notch, Pa., to the late Andrew and Teresa (Grabowski) Broda, he graduated from Holy Family Catholic Church School in Sugar Notch.
With the onset of his dad’s illness, he went directly to work as a coal miner at Huber Colliery, Ashley Pa., (the Huber Breaker) in support of his mother and family, instead of attending high school. His strong work ethic in support of his family continued after leaving Huber, and over the course of his lifetime included a 25-year career with Whippany Paper Board Company, followed by another 10 years at Warner-Lambert (Morris Plains), prior to his retirement in 1989.
He was a loving, generous, and devoted family man and is preceded in death by his parents (Andrew 1953, Teresa 1970), his beloved wife, Patricia (2009), his in-laws Alma and Edgar Willis (1996, 1999), his youngest daughter Cheryl Ann (1996), as well as his sister Josephine and her husband Joseph Grucella, and his brother Andrew and his wife Mary Broda.
He is survived by his sister, Irene, and her husband Stanley Dudeck, and his brother Henry and his wife Patricia Broda. He is also survived by his eldest daughter Donna and his only son and caregiver, John, and his partner, Bernard Knudsen. He is also survived by Patricia’s brothers and sister and their spouses and families, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be sent to the Church of the Redeemer – Memorial Fund (36 South St, Morristown, N.J., 07960), in Gene’s memory and because of his love of animals, a memorial arch will be erected at the entrance to the Animal Memorial Garden.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph, N.J. (www.tuttlefh.com). Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. also at the funeral home. Interment will be at Succasunna Presbyterian Cemetery, Succasunna, N.J.
