Even with tropical storm Cindy threatening the area, the annual Banana Day festivities went on. It’s also the day marked Customer Appreciation Day with complimentary banana splits distributed to visitors, as well as deep subscription discounts given to customers.
To some, Banana Day is a grand social event with people gathering in the Southern Standard lobby, visiting with friends and enjoying a cool treat.
Gladys Morgan, 94, was happy to attend with friend Josephine Fitts, and enjoyed talking with long-time friend Monice McGiboney.
“I’ve enjoyed this so much,” said Morgan. “I love the newspaper, and my good friend shares hers with me.”
Dee Dee Lanier brought 6-year-old grandson, Adam Grissom, with her as a special treat for him.
“I needed to come take advantage of the discount renewal rate, and told him we had someplace special today,” said Lanier. “He doesn’t like to eat bananas, but loves ice cream, so he really enjoyed the surprise. This is so fun, better than Walmart.”
She and Adam hurried to finish their chores to get home before the start of the rain.
“I just saw on the weather the rain is headed our way, so it’s time to get home,” said Lanier.
In observance of June being designated Dairy Month, reigning 4-H Dairy Princess Erica Cantrell, and Junior Dairy Princess Aleah Davis took part in the Banana Day activities by greeting folks and helping serve the tasty treats. Joining them was Dairy Month chairman Erin Cantrell.
“I’ve enjoyed taking part in this day and becoming reacquainted with citizens I’ve known my whole life,” said Erica.
Erin has hosted a slate of activities throughout the month, and like her sister, enjoyed visiting with people from the community.
“As Dairy Month comes to a close, it has been an activity-filled month, and I have enjoyed promoting dairy at every opportunity,” said Erin.
Three very nice door prizes were given away at the end of the day, including a gas grill, an ice cream maker and a cooler.
