Summer reading program highlights 'Universe of Stories'

Summertime is a time for vacations, outdoor fun and a break from school. Because of that, some kids get bored and find themselves having more screen time than reading time.

That’s one of the reasons summer reading programs are so important. This summer, libraries across the country will celebrate space exploration in their summer reading programs, with the theme “A Universe of Stories.”

Each year, both Magness Library and Morrison Public Library hold summer reading programs for children of all ages.

The fun nationwide theme will hopefully inspire children to dream big, believe in themselves and learn more about the great beyond. Many space activities and crafts, designed for all ages, will provide fun and educational opportunities.

Magness Library assistant director Merissa Chapman says sign-ups will start May 15, and will run through the summer. Registration day will be June 12, and Chapman encourages everyone to register to ensure a complimentary lunch will be available to everyone.

“We will have the free lunches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but we need to have an accurate count,” said Chapman. “The lunches are provided by the state, are healthy and well balanced.”

The Summer Reading program will run through July 25, except for the week of July 4.

“We have a really fun Summer Reading program planned,” said Chapman. ‘We encourage all ages to sign up and join in the fun.”

They welcome the Super Science Guy back to Magness Library on June 13 starting at 1 p.m.  Ventriloquist Joyce Carrol will be on hand June 27 at 10 a.m.

Child-friendly movies pertaining to the theme will be shown throughout the summer on the usual Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 12 p.m. Crafts, games and stories will also be available for children throughout the summer.

• Morrison Public Library has programs for youth on June 4, 11, 18 and 25 starting at 10 a.m. Children up to 13 years of age are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult guardian or parent.

They will utilize the theme “A Universe of Stories” with lots of exciting projects.

Morrison Public Library is located at 138 West Maple Street. Library director Bonnie Davis can be contacted at 931-635-2060.
