In the spirit of Thanksgiving, members of Westwood Church of Christ prepared a full-course meal and offered it to anyone who wanted to enjoy it Thanksgiving day.
The second-year event served around 170 people. That included about 100 people who ate at the church’s fellowship hall and another 70 who had their meals delivered.
The Westwood congregation prepared the meal which featured all the traditional holiday favorites such as turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and cranberry sauce.
There was no shortage of desserts, including the famous fudge pie made by Deana Jones. The pie was so tasty, it had some volunteer workers scraping the pan for crumbs.
The food was top-notch and even included a tray of turkey and dressing prepared by professional caterer Steve Grove. His mother, Betty, is a Westwood member. Dr Pepper employee and Westwood member Tim Deason made sure there were plenty of soft drinks on hand.
The fellowship hall was decorated with orange, yellow and brown tablecloths tastefully arranged by Dee Hard. Tables included placemats that were colored by the Westwood children and then laminated.
The meal was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but many hungry patrons were anxious to get in the door. Serving began nearly an hour early, just after 10 a.m.
For those who couldn’t make it to the church on Morrison Street to enjoy the meal, take-out orders were available. Jerry Davenport and Brad Hillis traveled around the community delivering the meals.
Church organizers were pleased with the turnout and with the amount of food prepared. Some volunteers estimated it was enough food to feed 300. Current plans are to continue the holiday meal in the future.
