February is sometimes referred to as the month of love, with much focus on giving praise and attention to our loved ones. The “Rock My World” Valentine party at NHC Healthcare did that with family and staff members working together to make the event special for residents. They were joined by the Warren County High School chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) in the activities, making it an intergenerational event.
NHC activity director Amanda Sain said, “It was a wonderful party, and the students were a huge help in making it special for our residents. They were great with the residents, took part in the activities and it looked like they had a good time.”
Musical entertainment was provided by Billy Kitchen, a group specializing in oldies music. He and wife, Rhonda, hail from Woodbury and have performed at NHC before and were invited back due to popular demand.
The highlight of the day was the crowning of the Valentine King and Queen chosen from the approximate 110 residents. Henrietta Burgess was crowned Queen, with Rickey Simmons earning the King title.
They were chosen after residents, visitors and staff cast ballots for their favorite choice.
“They are awarded an assortment of gifts, with Burgess getting a bouquet of her favorite yellow roses,” said Sain. “The voting is very secretive, with no one knowing the results until the last minute.”
Another fun aspect of the day was a kissing booth, where folks could guess the number of Hershey kisses packed in a container. The booth was manned by resident Karrina Mills, who especially likes to be involved with every function.
FCCLA members were celebrating their National FCCLA Week, with the theme “Together We Are” being utilized. The local chapter has completed or is working on several projects. Some projects help the community such as advocating environmental concerns, working with the elderly, teen dating violence prevention and collecting items for parentless pets.
For the “Rock My World” party, the students focused on the elderly, collecting items and providing gift bags for every resident. They also provided much- needed manpower to implement the program.
“They helped us out so much, working the soft-serve machine, filling gift bags and helping with the crowning,” said Sain. “We so appreciate this group of young people and that they take time to help others.”
