Patel launches local Lights of Hope fundraiser to fight cancer

Naina Patel wants to spread a light of hope for cancer patients. She has established a fundraiser and is offering to create Lights of Hope bags in return for contributions.

Local residents are being asked to help prove that even a pandemic will not stop Americans from showing solidarity in the battle against cancer.

Naina Patel, a 2019 Covenant Academy graduate, has established a Lights of Hope fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Her goal is to raise $500 for the organization before Sept. 12 while helping people become involved in this year’s light display.

“This September will be the 10th annual Lights of Hope Across America event,” said Patel. “Lights of Hope bags can be dedicated to loved ones who have been touched by cancer, but anyone can make a donation to show their support for continued cancer research.”

Each bag is a $10 donation. For that contribution, Patel will decorate the bag and make it part of this year’s celebration slated for September.

“Usually there’s an event on Sept. 12 in Washington D.C. and the bags are placed to send a visible reminder to Congress that they need to do more to help fight this disease,” said Patel. “That event is kind of up in the air right now with COVID-19. It might be that they are displayed in communities from coast to coast, a Lights of Hope Across America. If that decision is made, we’ll plan on placing these in McMinnville.”

Anyone who wishes to make a donation can visit Patel’s Facebook page. Located there is a link to “Naina Patel’s Lights of Hope Page” located there.
