The Little Golden Bus, a festively decorated pop-up bookstore and art show on wheels, will be making a stop at Morrison Public Library on Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the popular children’s books.
Library director Bonnie Davis encourages families to make plans to be part of the historic event celebrating 75 years of Little Golden Books and partake of the activities.
“The bus includes a walk through exhibit of the history of Little Golden Books and other activities for kids,” said Davis. “Adults should plan to tour the exhibit to reminisce about a favorite Little Golden Book from childhood.”
The Little Golden Books were launched in October 1942, with its 25 cents price point, availability in chain and department stores, vivid covers and interior art, uniform trim size and eye-catching gold spine appealing to many. This was during World War II when metal was being rationed, and few toys were being made. Illustrated children’s books were expensive and out of reach for most Americans.
Children took ownership of their Little Golden Books, boosting the literacy rate following World War II. Since 1942, more than 1,400 Little Golden Books have been published, sales have topped 2 billion copies, and 8 million-plus books are sold annually.
Morrison Public Library is located at 138 West Maple Street in Morrison, and can be reached at 931-635-2060. General public and school groups are encouraged to make plans to attend the free literary event.
