Nothing sets the scene for a special event like the glimmer of a glamourous gown. It could be that perfect prom gown, or the once-in-a-lifetime wedding gown.
While most girls dream about their prom dress for about three years, a girl can dream about her wedding dress much of her life. Therefore, it’s important to choose a dress that shows your personality and style, but is also unique.
It’s crucial you do some research to familiarize yourself with the type of dresses available and which styles flatter your figure. It’s suggested to take some time and go try on several different gowns and different styles, just to see what suits you best.
Locally we have two wonderful business with a great selection of both prom and wedding gowns. The Cat’s Meow Bridal and Formal has racks and racks of prom and special-occasion gowns, as well as wedding gowns and accessories.
“We have some lovely prom dresses from several designers,” said Cat’s Meow owner Ellen Hankal. “Some of our brands are Blush, Jovani, Rachel Alan and Favaina. We are proud to say we have gowns in sizes from 0 to 30.”
Kathy’s of McMinnville does not have wedding gowns, but is a specialist in fitting girls with prom or pageant gowns and has been providing lovely gowns to girls for many years.
Kathy Conger and her staff are eager to help each girl find the special gown for any occasion. They also have a wide assortment of sizes and styles.
“Most of the young ladies this year are going for the floor-length styles,” said sales associate Sue Allison. “We have Sherri Hill, Jovani, Colors, and a new line called Glow with some beautiful dresses.”
Some questions girls should consider before purchasing a prom dress are:
Do you like formal gowns or semi-formal dresses?
Are you looking for long or short? Consider the comfort of the dress, because you will be wearing it a long time and dancing throughout the night.
Do you want a strapless, halter, one shoulder of sleeves?
What style appeals to you most? Do you like baby doll, mermaid, A-line, ball gown, cocktail or vintage?
What colors or patterns do you like, and what kind of fabric appeals to you?
The choice of a wedding dress can be a monumental task, with lots of lovely choices for the bride-to-be. The spring 2015 bridal runways featured everything from detachable tulle overskirts to romantic off-the-shoulder necklines. From new necklines to interesting embellishments and the addition of color, wedding dress styles are a breath of fresh air.
The Cat’s Meow is a full bridal store, with everything needed to make the day special in one location. Gowns for the bride and all her wedding party, as well as tuxedo rental for the groom and his groomsmen, are available.
Bride-to-be Jessica Wilcher will wed Clint Newman on Sept. 26 on his family’s farm. She chose a mermaid-style gown from The Cat’s Meow and says she knew it was the dress the minute she tried it on.
“It is a very classic, but elegant gown of lace,” said Wilcher. “I love it, but most of all, it’s comfortable.”
According to professionals, some tips to consider when shopping for a wedding dress include:
Take proper undergarments and shoes on the shopping trip.
Purchase a dress that fits now, not one you will try to lose weight to fit in.
Skip the entourage. Only bring a few people who know you and your style, and who will give you an honest opinion.
Listen to your salesperson. They probably know more about the gowns than anyone else. It’s always good to be open to suggestions.
Have a price in mind and try to stick to your budget.
Call in advance for an appointment, and try to choose days that are not so busy.
Trust your instincts. When you find the perfect dress ... you will know it and not want to put on anything else.
