Red is a color that grabs attention. That’s precisely why it’s the color that’s been selected to raise awareness of women’s heart issues. It’s a problem which needs to be noticed.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. It will kill a woman in the U.S. approximately every 80 seconds.
Friday was Go Red for Women Day, a movement that saw participation throughout Warren County
Go Red for Women encourages women to lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.” It’s knowledge that could be life saving.
Five numbers all women should know to take control of their heart health are:
1) total cholesterol,
2) HDL cholesterol,
3) blood pressure,
4) blood sugar, and
5) body mass index (BMI).
Knowing these key numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases.
According to the American Heart Association, 1-in-3 women die of heart disease and stroke each year. Go Red is also an acronym. It stands for:
G: GET YOUR NUMBERS
Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol.
O: OWN YOUR LIFESTYLE
Stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, and eat healthy. It’s up to you. No one can do it for you.
R: REALIZE YOUR RISK
We think it won’t happen to us, but heart disease kills 1-in-3 women.
E: EDUCATE YOUR FAMILY
Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.
D: DON’T BE SILENT
Tell every woman you know heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women.
Go Red to fight heart disease
