There’s nothing quite like fresh garden fruits and vegetables for flavor and nutrition. Area citizens have the opportunity to take advantage of the crops by visiting one of our area Farmers Markets.
Our most established market is held at the pavilion downtown every Saturday and Wednesday until late November. Director Mary Cantrell and board members work diligently to make it better each year for both vendors and customers. Currently just about everything is bountiful: fresh peaches, cantaloupe, green beans, assorted varieties of corn and many other crops.
Attendees can also purchase flower arrangements, canned items, baked goods, organic chicken and eggs, as well as barbecue items.
The Chuckle Monkeys booth features assorted baked goods, ranging from cakes and pies to candy and cupcakes.
“We are a family operated business,” said owner Sheri Denning. “We involve all the children. We all bake and we all clean.” Chuckle Monkeys has only been in business a few months and opens its storefront at 310 West Main Street for special events, by appointment or for pick-ups. They also do custom cakes, cookie bouquets and sweet gift packs. The Dennings can be reached by calling 931-507-CAKE, or visiting www.chucklemonkeys.com.
Warren County High School student Martin Grissom participates both at the downtown Farmers Market and a market at his school. The student market is open each Monday from 8 a.m. till noon, with a few students selling their products.
“Right now I have ambrosia corn, which is a lot like peaches and cream,” said Grissom. “I have eight acres of corn and two more acres of other produce.” The school market will be open through Aug. 10, and is located on the school grounds.
A new endeavor this summer is the Morrison Farmers Market, located on Maple Street in downtown Morrison. Mayor Sue Anderson is happy to provide this service to local growers and prospective customers.
The market is open each Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and exhibitors are invited to participate. There is no charge to exhibit, but vendors need to call City Hall at 635-2363 to get an application.
