Still no plans for local Popshelf, DG says

Dollar General says it plans to have approximately 1,000 of its Popshelf stores open by the end of fiscal year 2025. The question is when will McMinnville land its first Popshelf?

Dollar General has opened two of its upper-end stores called Popshelf in Murfreesboro.

The Popshelf brand, according to Dollar General officials, is aimed at wealthier shoppers who still value a great deal.

Popshelf stores are roughly 9,000 square feet and carry items such as home goods, seasonal décor, and party supplies. Over 90% of the merchandise sold by Popshelf costs $5 or less, the company said.

Warren County may be considered the Dollar General Capital of the World with 13 stores, but we’re not in line for a Popshelf at this point, according to a company spokesperson.

“Popshelf currently does not have plans for a location in McMinnville, but we are constantly evaluating locations to add new Popshelf stores,” said public relations coordinator Emma Hall in an email to the Standard last week.

There are currently 30 Popshelf stores in six states – with aggressive plans for about 100 more locations in the next fiscal year. Dollar General says it plans to have approximately 1,000 of its Popshelf stores open by the end of the 2025 fiscal year.

Dollar General debuted Popshelf about a year ago, aimed at wealthier, suburban shoppers. It’s a different demographic than the Dollar General brand, which the company says caters to customers with an annual household income of $40,000 or less.

Dollar General has more than 18,000 stores across 46 states. To drive growth, the retailer has been opening additional locations at a rapid clip. It is also adding fresh fruits and vegetables to more of its stores and expanding into healthcare. It hired its first chief medical officer in July.

Dollar General chief merchandising officer Emily Taylor says the retailer is speeding up expansion plans for Popshelf because of its popularity with customers.

Popshelf places an emphasis on colorful displays and frequent merchandise changes to make visits to stores feel like a treasure hunt, whether shoppers are looking for a gift, preparing for a party, or decorating for the holidays.

Popshelf stores offer customers an option to buy online and pick up in the store. Taylor said the company will likely start shipping purchases to homes, too, so people who don’t live near a Popshelf store can buy the products.
