Family, friends mourn for former NBA player Wright
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Relatives and friends of Lorenzen Wright
gathered Wednesday and grieved for the former NBA player who has been
missing for 10 days, as police investigated the discovery of a man's
body outside of Memphis. Wright's uncle, Curtis Wright, told The
Associated Press that police called the player's father, Herb Wright,
Wednesday afternoon with the news he had died. Sgt. Alyssa
Macon-Moore of the Memphis Police Department wrote in an e-mail to the
AP that police were investigating the death of an unidentified man
beside a wooded area about 15 miles south of downtown Memphis. Asked if
the man was Wright, she wrote they could not confirm the victim's
identity Wednesday night.
East Tenn. boy dies when muzzleloader explodes
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) — A northeast Tennessee sheriff says a teenage boy has died when a muzzleloading rifle exploded. The
Johnson City Press reported the 14-year-old victim's name wasn't
immediately released after the incident late Wednesday afternoon. Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes said investigators are treating the boy's death as accidental. Mathes said a lot of youths in East Tennessee use muzzleloaders to hunt with. The newspaper reported the boy's grandmother, who lives next door, heard the explosion and called 911.
Police: Gunman kills 3 then himself in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio police say they believe a
man fatally shot a woman and two men then turned the gun on himself in
a home in the city's north side. Police Sgt. Chris Benavides says
the man carried two handguns as he entered the home in a quiet
cul-de-sac in a gated community on Wednesday evening and shot the three. Benavides
says the woman's children were playing outside when they heard shots
ring out. They ran into the house, saw their dead mother, then fled. He
says the gunman then apparently shot himself.
4 killed in plane crash at Alaska military base
ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (AP) — Four airmen were killed
in a cargo plane that crashed during a training run at an Air Force
base, military authorities said Thursday. The crash sent a fireball
hundreds of feet into the air, witnesses said. Three of the men
were in the Alaska Air National Guard and the fourth was on active duty
at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Air Force Col. John McMullen said. Their
names have not been released pending notification of relatives.
Hands-only CPR, pushy dispatchers are lifesavers
ATLANTA (AP) — More bystanders are willing to attempt CPR if an
emergency dispatcher gives them firm and direct instructions —
especially if they can just press on the chest and skip the
mouth-to-mouth, according to new research. The two new studies
conclude that "hands-only" chest compression is enough to save a life.
They are the largest and most rigorous yet to suggest that breathing
into a victim's mouth isn't needed in most cases. The American
Heart Association has been promoting hands-only CPR for two years,
though it's not clear how much it's caught on. The new studies should
encourage dispatchers and bystanders to be more aggressive about using
the simpler technique.
Titans sue Lane Kiffin, USC for poaching assistant
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are suing Southern
California and coach Lane Kiffin for "maliciously" luring away
assistant running backs coach Kennedy Pola a week before training camp
opens. Tennessee Football Inc., the company that owns the Titans,
filed the lawsuit Monday in Davidson County Chancery Court against both
the university and Kiffin. The lawsuit accuses Southern
California and Kiffin of violating Pola's contract that required him to
have written permission to discuss a job with anyone other than the
Titans. Tennessee hired Pola as running backs coach in February
only to lose him Saturday to Southern California as the Trojans' new
offensive coordinator and running backs coach. "USC and Kiffin maliciously intended to — and did — induce Pola to breach the Pola contract," the lawsuit charges.
Construction worker falls to his death
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Chattanooga say a construction worker has fallen to his death. The
man was working on the third floor of an apartment building under
construction, standing on a bucket to plaster a ceiling when the bucket
gave way Monday afternoon. Police have identified the victim as 31-year-old Jimy Henry Tovar of Acworth, Georgia. Tovar fell 30 feet and landed headfirst on concrete. A news release from police said Tovar was taken to a hospital, where he died.
