What Do You Do? 9/3/10 You mentioned that if you have a 16 year old in your face screaming - what do you do? Well, by that time if it happens it may be too late - but then again there may be several other things that strike fear in evey parent's heart and thats unwanted pregnancy, STD's, teenage drinking, drugs, and the worst is highway fatality. But there are a few things that parents can do way before it gets to that point. Everyone in the family goes to Church as a family every Sunday. The family eats supper together and Sunday dinner together. Everyone collects something like stamps, buttons, baseball cards, coins, autographs, or antiques. The children are allowed to play youth sports like T-ball or Little League or soccer which teach teamwork and cooperation. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts build strong character and parents have to live themselves as an example for their children. If parents smoke then kids will probably smoke. If parents swear then kids will have unsavory language. If parents drink to excess then kids may also develope a problem. If parents do drugs then what example will that be for the children. So with a yelling 16 year old thats disrespectful then its time for parents to realize that they probably have just one more chance to mold their offspring into a productive member of society and the way they have been doing it just hasn't worked or isn't working. Simple, its called tough love or cold love. Bad grades in school allows the state to take away drivers license. No automobile for the teenager. Don't come home early. Cancel the insurance and cancel the registration. Telephone the police and ask for help with a B.O.L.O. (be on the lookout for) and inform police driving without insurance or registration. Suspect drugs? Ask law enforcement for assistance. Lastly, parents can request assistance from the Court/Legal System and Police with a request for Unruley Petition. Never heard of a parent who asked the judge for help get into trouble. Do nothing and see how much trouble and financial distress parents can get into because of their little darling. I would much rather have my child hate my guts now and thank me later on down the road then have to visit a grave and wish I only took the first step to help. There are too many I SHOULDDA or I COULDDA after its too late. My children are a gift and its my job to guide, lead, train, and protect. If I fail my children then I too have failed. Being a parent is the toughest job I could ever have and is also the most rewarding.

I agree that McMinnville should have packaged liquor. We need the tax dollars and maybe it will bring us out of the stone ages.

I personally do not drink alcohol but I do think it would boost the economy of our town. Just think of all the tax money we give to Coffee County when whiskey is bought in that town. Now I know all the holier than thou people are going to campaign against it but which would you rather have someone driving 2 miles to get a bottle and taking it home to consume or someone driving 22 miles and going ahead and drinking it while they are returning to McMinnville. It will also be interesting to find out just how much of the ad money against package whiskey comes from Coffee County, after if it goes thru here they stand to lose a lot of that tax money we will be keeping at home. Come on McMinnville, haven't we given enough of our tax dollars to our neighbors in Coffee and Van Buren counties. I for one will be voting for packaged liquor in McMinnville, and thanks to Mr. Sheth for having the guts to get it on the ballot.

My children got an old fashion swat on the butt when they misbehaved. It taught them respect, not to misbehave and not talk back. What has happened to the paddle in school? It has been replaced by police officers. What a shame. Today the parents feel like their hands are tied and the kids know it. If they spank them, then do they end up in court? If you have a 16 year old standing in your face screaming, what do you do?

I would like to say that I saw yesterday the problem with the school buses. I was trying to shop with an older friend, and when mothers brought their children into the store, there was absolutely NO discipline! the brats were playing tag, running through the isles, chasing each other, throwing toys off the rack into the floor, screaming, yelling, pitching a fit if mommy said no about anything. Whatever you want to say or whomever you want to blame, discipline and respect BEGINS in the home. there is NO excuse for the behavior I saw yesterday. Now it seems more popular to blame adhd than to discipline. I would not want to be a daycare provider, a teacher, or a bus driver for any amount of money! And I DO NOT apologize for using the word brats, because those I saw yesterday truly were.

I also drive a school bus and I will not leave a name either. To address some of the problems being discussed here: (1) There are about 4 aids that one of them may ride routes when requested by the driver, (2) The driver can seperate them by age if they choose to do so, and if there is a problem is a good idea. We also have the authority to assign seats for everyone on the bus. There are several drivers that practice this and we are furnished with a seating chart if we want to do this. I have done this in the past when it was merited. I personally do not allow my riders to move around. They ask for permission to change seats and if they move without permission they get an assigned seat for the remainer of the school year and only High School are allowed to sit in the back. NO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ALLOWED back there. (3) I do not want some of these parents riding my bus. More of the same behavior I see from their children. (4) Some principles do not cooperate when a student is taken in for discipline. They want to give them written warnings. We can give them warnings and by the time they are taken in they have indeed received numerous ones from the driver. We have a written proedure to follow: 1st offense-3days denied bus service. 2nd offense-5days off the bus, 3nd offense suspended for the rest of the school year. There is more to driving a bus than holding the steering wheel. We have to ensure the safety of the students also by keeping them from being bullied. If your child is having this type of problem talk to the driver first, and if this does not solve the problem the driver is not doing their job and you need to talk to our supervisor. We all have cameras (most have multiple ones) and you can ask to view the tape if it involves your child. I take a very dim of this type of behavior for every child has the right to feel safe.

I'm wondering where people think we would get the money to buy the several buses it would take to keep high school kids from the smaller ones. Not to mention the drivers who would have to be paid. And yet there had better not be a tax increase. There is no reason that all the kids can't ride the same bus. It all starts at home folks...teach your kids some self-control. When kids learn to respect their elders, those in authority, and others who are weaker than themselves...most of the problems go away. The ones who are to blame are the parents, using that term loosely, who think their kids are better than others. Well, they aren't. No one child is worth more than another. Teach them how to act and they generally do well. I can tell which kids on my bus have parents who are actually teaching them manners. I can also tell which parents stick them in front of a tv with a bucket of chicken. You get out what you put it in...it's as simple as that.

Duane really hit the nail on the head with his column about the band. I remember well in the early eighties the hard work and recognition of the band and pioneerettes. My sons lived and breathed for the band. We parents worked in the concession stands and made the long trips on the buses. The highlight of our band years was when they went to New York City and marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. There were really some proud kids that day and some even more proud parents for them to be recognized nationally this way. Mike Chilcutt and Patti Clark were top notch directors who demanded top notch performances and produced top notch performers in our children. A big belated thanks for their work and dedication. I'm afraid the band in Warren County is going in the direction of everything else here. It is sad.

Why is there not a choral music program in the high school in this county? I have never been in a high school that does not have a chorus. Most also have string music programs. We all know kids who participate in music programs are the top kids in the school. This an issue that is important to this county and needs to be addressed.

Maybe it is time to run separate routes for elementary, middle, and high schools. You would think the oldere ones would be nice to the little ones. There is no excuse for this behavior.

Submitted By: MEA Submitted: 9/1/2010
Finally after all this time people can see the problems we are facing on the school bus. I for one do not have an option of choosing for my child not to ride the bus although on my days off I do drive them to school and pick them up. I approximate my children being on the bus maybe five minutes tops and in the last two years multiple things have happened. One involving I high school child making my five yr old son cry and feel threatened and then my 14yr old daughter had to step in to protect him from this bully and in return worry about what would happen to her for this chain reaction of events. Now my daughter is in high school and has friends that drive and no longer rides the bus and I cringe at the thought of my boys riding it alone because who will be their advocote now. I think it would be a great idea to put a school deputy on some of the more rough buses to protect our children or separate the ages on the buses. They separate them by schools yet they throw them on a bus together. It makes no sense to me.

Submitted By: Submitted: 8/31/2010
I think a large part of the problem on school buses would go away if parents were made to ride with the kids as unpaid aides. They never believe their little angel did anything wrong. If parents would make their kids behave at home, and mean it, the buses wouldn't be as bad either. I would never dream of doing the things I see the kids on my bus doing. Yes, I drive a bus and most of you have no idea what it's like. If something happens...it's our butt on the line. It is a huge responsibility and for very little pay. I love my bus kids and I would hate for anything to happen to any of them...but there are a few that could stand a trip behind the woodshed.

WHILE I'M ON MY SOAPBOX, I JUST HAVE TO BRING OUT AN OBVIOUS DANGER THAT COUNTY AND CITY BUS DRIVERS FACE. FIRST LET ME SAY THAT I'D RATHER BE A MINE DISPOSAL TECH. THAN TO DRIVE A SCHOOL BUS FULL OF ROWDY KIDS THAT WILL JUMP UP IN YOUR FACE AND CUSS YOU LIKE A DOG, KNOWING THAT YOU CAN'T JERK THEM UP AND WARM THEIR BACKSIDE UP WITH A GOOD OLE' PADDLE LIKE THEY DID WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL. IT'S HARD ENOUGH FOR THESE HIGHLY TRAINED AND EXTREMELY PATIENT DRIVERS TO KEEP THEIR EYES ON ALL OF THE HAZARDS THAT SURROUND THEM. JUST MANUEVERING SUCH A LARGE VEHICLE AROUND SHARP CORNERS AND NARROW BACKROADS OF WARREN COUNTY IS A TASK IN ITSELF. HOW CAN THEY DO THAT SAFELY WITH ONE EYE ON THE ROAD AND THE OTHER ON 40 0R 50 OR EVEN 60 KIDS TO BABYSIT??? MONEY NEEDS TO BE SET ASIDE TO ASSIGN ANOTHER PERSON ON EACH BUS TO AID THE DRIVER. THIS WAY THE DRIVER CAN FOCUS SAFELY AND SOLELY ON THE ROAD, WHILE AN AID (PREFERRABLY DEPUTIZED SO HE OR SHE CAN GRAB A ANGRY, DISRESPECTFUL CHILD BY THE ARM IF NECESSARY)TAKES CARE OF MAINTAINING THE PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT. WHAT IF, WHILE RIDING THE BUS, TWO HIGH SCHOOL BOYS DECIDED, FOR WHAT EVER REASON, TO BEAT UP SOMEBODY THAT THEY DON'T LIKE. AS THE FIGHT BEGINS, THE BUS DRIVER LOOKS UP IN HIS OR HER MIRROR AND HOLLARS FOR THE BOYS TO STOP. HIS EYES ARE OFF OF THE ROAD AND HE IS EXTREMELY DISTRACTED FROM HIS SAFE DRIVING HABITS!SOMETHING AWFUL COULD HAPPEN UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS!!WOULD THE CITY OR COUNTY BE RESPONSIBLE OR EVEN LIABLE FOR SUCH A THING??WOULD A JURY SAY THAT THE DRIVER DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH HELP TO MAINTAIN A SAFE CONDITION ON THE BUS???? I SAY GIVE THESE GUYS A RAISE AND GET THEM SOME HELP OUT THERE IN THE TRENCHES!!!

THANK YOU, MIKE ADAMS! I do not know Mr. Hennessee, nor have I been to the kennels lately. The problem with the stray animals is in fact the pet owners. They want the cute little puppy or kitten, then when it comes time for it to be spayed or neutered they can't find the time or money to do so and when nature takes its course, they are trying to give away an UNWANTED litter of animals. If they are unable to do that, then maybe they'll just throw the whole bunch away at a dumpster or on a back road, take them to the back of a mall, whatever! They think that takes care of the problem, however it does not. That creates more of the animals someone else has to deal with. We live in a remote ares, and have to deal with feral cats, and dog packs. They are pitiful, and it's a shame. Thanks to so called "animal lovers." It is far kinder to put down an animal than to dump it and let it fend for itself. And they are indeed unwanted, unplanned for animals. I wish there was a way to force pet owners to spay and neuter. If you don't do that for your pets, you are not an animal lover at all.

Jeffery Simmons: Marching bands choose a shirt that matches their show concept. This year the band's show is Pyramids of Egypt, so a shirt with pyramids was chosen. Black shirts are preferred because they look more professional under the bibbers (the pants of the marching uniform). I suggest you do a little research about marching band before you continue to publicly criticize them meaninglessly. Attending a band competition to see this band perform would be a good start. There is more to band than just entertaining popcorn munchers at halftime. Demanding the band to apologize because of your ignorance is completely uncalled for. It's bad enough that these kids are often called "geeks" or "dorks" by other students at school for participating in band without the local newspaper adding to it. Stop trying to take away what little support this program gets. It would be great to see something positive about the band in the paper for a change. These kids put in at least eleven hours of rehearsal a week in addition to being at every football game on Fridays and band competitions on Saturdays, and it's sad that our local paper searches for reasons to criticize them instead of highlighting all the hard work these students do every day.

I JUST WANTED TO SAY HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE DIRECTOR OF THE WARREN COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL, MR DAVID HENNESSEE. HE AND HIS STAFF HAVE ONE OF THE HARDEST, MOST UNENVYABLE, AND UNDERPAID PROFESSIONS OUT THERE. WHILE DEALING WITH "REAL" ANIMAL ABUSE CASES THAT EXIST IN THE COUNTY (SUCH AS PITBULL FIGHTING ,BEATING AND STARVING OF ANIMALS OF ALL KINDS) HE HAS BEEN PERSONALLY ATTACKED BY ANIMAL ACTIVIST WHICH HAVE A NOT SO SECRET AGENDA. THAT IS THEY WANT TO SHUT DOWN ALL KENNELS THAT PUT ANIMALS DOWN! EVEN IF IT MEANS PAINTING A GOOD MAN LIKE A CRUEL PERSON!GET REAL ACTIVISTS! WARREN COUNTY TAXPAYERS ARE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR MR. HENNESSEE TO HANG ONTO AND FEED AND VACCINATE AND SPAY AND NEUTER 1,000 DOGS A YEAR UNTIL HE FINDS THEM LOVING HOMES! PLUS, I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE THAT THREATEN TO KILL ANOTHER HUMAN OR BURN A PERSONS HOME DOWN BECAUSE OF A PICTURE OF A MOTHER HAVING PUPPIES THEY SAW ON FACEBOOK THAT SOME ACTIVIST PUT ON THERE, ARE A LOT MORE DANGEROUS TO OUR SOCIETY THAN THE WARREN COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL DIRECTOR WHO'S DOING THE BEST HE CAN. GET OFF THE MANS BACK! THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE A STRAY DOG TRYING TO ATTACK YOUR DAUGHTER WHILE SHE'S ON THE SLIP-N'-SLIDE, CALL THOSE SWEET, LITTLE ANIMAL RESCUERS. JUST SEE HOW MANY DASH TO YOUR DOOR TO HELP YOU WITH THAT AGGRESSIVE, FOAMING MOUTHED ANIMAL.TRY ZERO!!THEY CAN'T SELL THAT KIND OF A DOG TO ANYBODY!! YEP! I SAID SELL! THERE ARE TOO MANY ANIMALS OUT THERE EVEN FOR ALL THE RESCUES TO SAVE! THEY ADMIT IT! SO WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE ANIMALS THAT CAN'T BE FOUND HOMES FOR???YOU HAVE TO HUMANELY PUT THEM DOWN! I KNOW...I KNOW!! SOME OF YOU THINK THAT IT'S MURDER OF GOD'S CREATURES AND THAT THEIR LIFE IS JUST AS PRECIOUS AS A HUMANS. WHATEVER PEOPLE! IF A DOG IS GOING OVER A WATERFALL AT THE SAME TIME AS LITTLE GIRL......I'M PICKING THE LITTLE GIRL TO TRY AND RESCUE FIRST!! PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'T BEEN OUT TO THE WARREN COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL TO SEE IT FOR THEMSELVES AND MET MR. HENNESSEE BUT RATHER THEY HAVE BLINDLY JUMPED ON THE FACEBOOK BANDWAGON AND RAN THEIR MOUTH ABOUT HIM AND HIS STAFF...OWE THEM AN APOLOGY!!

Shame on James Clark for his article on the Warren County High School football team. It's no wonder these boys lack the confidence they need. If history repeats itself then perhaps the spread offense is what they need to improve their game. Because it's quite obvious that what they were doing before wasn't getting them wins either. I hope one day someone slams your children for their athletic abilities in a public forum.

Could the city possibly run any smaller ad regarding the hearing over the notice of intent to exceed the certified tax rate? I am sure many people will notice it. Maybe that is the reason it is so small of an ad, so that no one will see it and therefore no one will cause conflict, because they will be unaware of it even happening. I would appreciate my opinion being voiced before the hearing date. Thank you and have a nice day.

Daniel, Would it surprize you that the Warren County School System has enough money in their coffers now to pay off the wheel tax now and save some money for the county? Would it surprize you that Viola students attend Morrison and if a Viola school were built they could have gone home to a new school and repairs done to Morrison, Dibbrel could have been upgraded, and Irving College could have been upgraded too. As for Geometry books for the students, all it takes is one parent with a child aiming for MIT, Harvard, Brown, Yale, or Swannee, Perdue, Tenn Tech, or Georgia Tech and that child does poorly in PSAT/SAT scores in math because of no books to study and doesn't get accepted - there won't be enough Charmin around to pick up the mess created in the Central Office when a couple of lawyers get together and pay a visit or when a couple of TN Dept. of Education inspectors pay a visit because parents wrote letters to their Senators and Congressmen. Parents are the most powerful commodity in an educational community. If your child requires something that they are supposed to have - ask first. Every child/student at the high school, in my opinion, should have a current book for every subject that they can take home to study in prep for Gateways and SATs. If you have any doubts or questions, contact the TN Dept of Education.

Can someone please explain to me how a school system with a 40+million dollar budget and is in the process of building 2 multimillion dollar school cant afford to buy geometry books for its highschool students. They have directors on top of directors with chains of command that stretch for at least miles amd miles, but some how cant find money to buy books. I may be an oldschool parent, but I thought school and books went hand in hand. I guess having teachers copy lessons from one book and pass out to entire class makes it possible for the Caesar Palace of school administation buildings possible to operate. Where does all that money go. No way the good people from Warren County Schools could be abusing like they did in Metro Schools with administration personnel. Maybe have the geometry students have a carwash so they can raise money for their books. Public govt. run system and the student pay for it.

I live in Fl. part time. In the city we pay $100 for the big garbage can and are supplied 2 plastic bins. One for paper and one for plastic and cans. If you are not filling your recycle bins, you will be fined. Why can't that happen here?

Submitted By: warrencogal Submitted: 8/18/2010
I was glad to see the story about the recycling of plastic in today's paper. Maybe some day we can recycle everything in Warren County. I carefully save all my plastic bottles and put them in a large bag to take to the Fairgrounds site as our community site has no place for plastics. When I took my last bag out there, the guy unloading the regular garbage bags from the trunk of my car, grabbed the bag of plastic bottles and threw them in with the regular garbage. He could plainly see the bag was full of plastic bottles. I asked him why he threw the plastic in with the regular garbage, he replied "It's ALL garbage". With an attitude like this, it will be a long time before the people in Warren County adapt to the recycling program, especially the people who work at the sites. Why can't the sites have bins for all of the items that can be recycled? I realize some sites do NOT have room, but the one at Campaign has plenty of room for a plastic bin.

Lisa Hobbs had an excellent column in Sunday's paper. She addresses the fact that our stray animal problem in our county is actually created by irresponsible pet owners. We live in a rural area close to a church, and people who no longer want pets drop them off in the church parking lot. I have adopted one cat this way. I took her to the vet, had her spayed, and kept her. Unfortunately, I can't care for them all. Dogs are usually shot by the local farmers who have cattle because they kill the new calves. I suppose the cats just go feral Sad, because this just leads to more unwanted animals. It is sad that people look at an animal and think if they drop it somewhere then it's no longer a problem. It's a big problem, and only by everyone acting in a more responsible manner can it be fixed. If you have an animal you no longer want, find it a home, or if bad goes to worse, have it put down yourself. Don't put it out to starve.

What has Mr. Pelham got to hide that he won't let anyone in the kennels? McMinnville kills instead of trying to find homes for these animals. Maybe Mr. Pelham needs to hire someone that is willing to actually do their job. Here is an example of how this shelter SHOULD be run. http://www.humanesocietyofcharlotte.org/

Mr. Pelham, Why make the shelter so that no one can go beyond the lobby except employees. That just shows you are trying to hide something. How about you treat the problem and not put a bandage on the symptom? Now you really have taken the credibility away from anything at the shelter by hiding it. Think before you act!

You DO NOT know me or the efforts I make on behalf of other people, nor do I intend to go over them with you other than to say there is not a day that I do not preform an action that will help my fellow man, and no, I do not work for a government agency. I am retired, and am out every day volunteering, just not for animals. People are more important than animals to me, so that is where I put my efforts. I would appreciate it if all you animal people would keep your dogs off my lawn and leave them at home when you visit me. Dear Editor, I agree with Richie Churchill's comment in Wednesday's edition. The picture of the puppies in the sewage ditch speaks for itself! At the very least, it would have taken maybe 5 minutes of Mr. Hennessee's time to cover the ditch so the puppies would not fall in, as they are blind when newly born. Clay & Tammy Lerch should be commended for the animal lives they have saved. They do not do this for public recognition! As a Warren Countian I would like to say "Thank You" to Clay and Tammy. May God bless you for the selfless act of saving these animals & all the hard work you do! Mr. Pelham, you have been reelected to serve this county. It is time for you to take control of this situation and work to better the conditions at Animal Control. Until enough community support is reached and more concerned citizens show up at the monthly meetings, I am afraid the situation will not improve. I am ready for this county to be well known and smiled upon for it's good works toward animal rescue! For all of you that love puppy kisses and kittens purrs.....attend the meetings and show your concern and support!

To Mr TreesTreesTrees. So, you offer a guy a job at $12 an hour and the guy denied it. You should have offered $13 or $14 maybe. That doesn’t mean the guy was lazy, it means that you didn’t want to pay what he wanted for his labor, so instead you go and find cheaper “LEGAL” labor that benefits you. If you offer someone $12 an hour for labor, cheaper “LEGAL” workers will do it for $10 an hour. Ok, then if someone will do it for $10 and hour, then cheap “LEGAL” workers will do it for $8. At what point do we stop? When Americans will do it for $1 an hour and they’ll do it for free? I understand you want your business to survive, and we’d all hate to see those sweet nursery jobs leave, but at what cost to everyone else? If a business can’t afford to survive, then it doesn’t. Economics 101.

I enjoy reading these opinions people put in here. Some are crazy but interesting.Mine never get printed but I guess I step on toes. But I'm going to try one more time. This morning when I took my daughter and grandson to school I knew that there was new rules for this year. I knew I couldn't walk them to class which was fine except for all the heavy supplies they had to carry. But what was really upsetting was,my grandson has asthma really bad and has to have his inhaler with him, but the inhaler had to be log in with the nurse but the parents with 3rd graders on up could only go to the gym doors. So my daughter had to call central office to get in the school with her child's inhaler. I believe in safety but this is a little much. So instead of this school having an open door policy, it is a close door to the parents policy. If all the parents would stick together whenever it's fund raiser time, keep your money in your pockets, we might could get our wonderful school back. LOL

I'm always amazed at how short-sighted people can be. Take Mr. Clark's column about animals lovers. Does he not understand that just because one cares for and demands good treatment of animals...does not mean they don't want the same for people? The fact is that people go to jail generally when they harm other people. Animal abusers rarely go to jail. However, there is a very, very strong link to those who abuse animals also abusing people. Just ask any person who investigates animal cruelty. Many times they go out on a call to check on an abused animal and what do they find behind closed doors? Abused people. Most report that abuse. The animal was the living thing on outside, where people could see it, and that is why it got reported. The abused kids inside weren't seen to be abused...but it's reported by the Animal Cruelty Investigator. I care for animals. I also buy toys all year long for the Rescue Squad toy drive. I donate school supplies. I do the Angel Tree. I give to food banks. I give to the Red Cross. I guess that means I don't care about humans. Mr. Clark, as a reporter you should know never to make a blanket statement. Not everyone who loves animals turns a blind eye to humans in need.

My family donates to just about every cause that helps people, and from a very limited income. We deliver meals on wheels, give blood regularly, write to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and send care packages, put money in the many jars displayed in stores asking for help because someone is sick or hurt. MR. CLARK, THANK YOU ,THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the knowledge that there is at least one other person in town realizes that PEOPLE should be more important than animals!!! You can molest a child and you are "just sick and need help", but if you fail to pamper an animal, you are a low life criminal! I recently told one pet owner who told me that her dog was "just like a baby" to remove her head from the dark storage area and get real! Seems as if a lot of people need that advice. While I don't think animals should be abused, I do think people should be more concerned with our fellow human beings. I wonder how many people so concerned with animal rescue have fed a hungry person, helped an elderly neighbor, visited a nursing home,or stood up for an abused or neglected child? My personal observation is that most of them would rather tell you what a sweet personality a pit bull has. It's horrible to think that Mr. Pelham has received death threats over this issue!

To:K I couldn't agree more, as long as citizen of Warren Co have to compete with low cost illegal labor, jobs aren't going to magically appear. I know people say that those jobs will just move elsewhere, but that’s a good thing as far as warren co is concerned. It would free up some nice river front land and properties that the nurseries own. Oh wait, where would they go? Under? doubtful, but they would have to start paying a competitive wage for labor and start paying taxes on all the people using that ONE social security number. There was a time when citizens of Warren Co filled those jobs. Anyone remember that?

Pelham was in office the last term, not Rogers. There are many questions that need to be answered. If the shelter is being run correctly, why wouldn't they welcome resuers and volunteers????? Why does it have to be a kill shelter??? Why is there not more being done there? How about fundraisers and request for volunteers???

Submitted By: Riche Churchill Submitted: 8/5/2010
To those who think people should volunteer to help at the animal control facility, you need to know that volunteers are not allowed. Liability concern is the excuse, not wanting to have conditions and practices observed is the reason. Regardless of the outcry over the alleged puppies-in-sewage situation, it is utterly ridiculous to ban the Lerches or anyone else from taking animals from the animal control facility and getting them into foster homes and/or to rescue groups. It saves the county MONEY. The AC doesn't have to feed, clean up after, euthanize and dispose of the carcasses when there are people willing and able to save dogs and cats picked up by or dropped of at Animal Control. As for spay-neuter laws, I'm all for it, but it's not going to happen anytime soon, if ever. "They" don't enforce the rabies tag LAW or the Roaming At Large LAW -- why (and how) would you imagine they would enforce a spay-neuter law?

Submitted By: Lucy Eastman Submitted: 8/5/2010
This animal situation, is bad. Mr. John Pelham got this problem left by the other man, Kenneth Roger, that was a County Commisioner. He didn't build the building the building was built wrong. You should welcome the Humane Society, to help find homes for your dogs! You who, didn't want to deal with the pet. You let them run free, not worring where they go, who's house they ruin. Or what causes wrecks in this town. You Warren County and City home owners you are letting your pet run, and breed any dogs. While the Warren County Humane Society try to catch up you want a puppy. You have done this, not caring enough to keep them out that shelter.

It is in my point of veiw that we should not be so quick to presume that the animal shelter is cruel heartless people that abuse animals. I agree that the pictures are disturbing but I also know that those people are working with what is availabe to them which is not alot. I being an animal lover no for a fact that animals find unusual places to deliver for example a car, couch, in my bath tub, under the sink, in a gray tote and so on. The limited space leaves less options when it indeeds come time to deliver. I think that help is needed at the center and the employees should indeed be educated on the proper way of running a shelter but the accusations should not be tossed around about these people because of a picture. It is now being investigated and if you are so concerned about those animals why not go adopt one or why not go volunteer on your next day off to help educate the staff or to have an idea of what it's like working in that enviroment through their eyes.

This is in regards to the article about the animal shelter. I have never responded on any article except this one. I personaly know Clay and Tammy Lerch and they are two of the most careing individuals that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. They would do any and everything in their power to help a animal. They do for these animals with no financial gain, if anything they have spent thousands to help these animals. I would trust them with any thing I have. People don't realize the real problems that are here in Warren County. We can all say this or that but walk in their shoes for one week crawl under abaondoned houses in sewage and absolute darkness to rescue a sweet moma and her puppies. To go and deliver dog food to ones that can't afford it. In one day go to Cookeville, Lebanon, Nashville and back to Sparta to save animals that were going to be put down and try and find fosters for these babies..This is such an overwhelming task and the impact that these 2 have made in Warren County needs to be appreciated. And every animal they have helped find homes for is spayed or neutered, again they get no financial compensation. It is only a lick and a look from a sweet Dog saying THANK YOU... Thank you for saving my LIFE!!!!

While not great, they have adequate funding if they have one full-time and two part-time employees. There are several people who have offered to help down there. The taxpayers need to know that if rescues were allowed and adoptions pushed money would come in instead of it all going out along with the animals. The cost of euthanizing would go down. Money from adoptions would come in and most rescues would not balk at paying a $5 or $10 pull fee. That's money in plus saving the cost of euthanasia. It doesn't cost anything at all for them to be humane. It doesn't take any more time to be humane. We allows these people to work there and assume they are doing their job. Obviously they are not. Personally, I think the Director should be fired and a new one take his place.

I had been noticing all the dead vegetation along the roads and thought how ugly it was. Then I noticed that not only had the "weeds" been sprayed with herbicide, beautiful trees and bushes had been sprayed also. Then, upon getting home one evening, I discovered someone had spray along a cut through our property. Not only did they get trees, they also sprayed all of my day lillies and ornamental grasses. Yet, with killing flowers & trees, they left more weedy areas unsprayed. These plantings will not be replaced by me since I am a heart patient and can't do the work anymore. I find it totally ironic that our "Welcome" signs state "Always in Bloom" yet we are going around killing the blooms intentionally! I am of the opinion that some crews either need more training (if the company has any training in place at all) before being cut loose with the herbicides or they just need to be cut loose from the company entirely!

I saw the story about our animal shelter on the news this morning, and it was sickening. Almost as sickening as people who will not take animals to be spayed and neutered. If you cannot afford to meet the needs of an animal, then you probably DO NOT need to take it home with you. This pregnant animal would not have given birth to 10 puppies had she been spayed. That being said, it was reprehensible that the caretaker at the shelter left her to give birth under such conditions. I hope I never see him in filth needing attention because I just might remember that dog!

To: Frank j: I agree with a lot you say and the city hasn't the slightest idea that the civic center is their golden goose. Why with the way they spent money trying to make downtown look like the thriving city of Franklin only to realize that McMinnville is not so thriving. At least we have the prettiest street lights around when they're on. When will they be on? They are energy efficient, Right?? WHATT!!! OK, What was the cost to the city for just ONE streetlight? What is the cost to operate one streetlight for eight hours a night times 30 nights? I wonder what would happen if the city aldermens' paycheck were based on the amount of money we had in the treasury? When can we elect new city officers? Can they be be replaced mid term? How many signatures would be required on the petition to have a special election? Do you believe that I might be a little unhappy with the city administration?

I am saying I DO NOT THINK SOCIETY SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR EXTRAS....However, I am also saying most of you are ASSUMING

Submitted By: frank j Submitted: 7/26/2010
Well now....McMinnville's leaders have come up with a new plan to save money. Cut hours of operation at the Civic Center (the only money generating service the city has)...get rid of 4 people from Parks & Recreation, and 4 firefighters, along with the removal of street lights. If anyone watches the news or reads the paper, maybe you saw the article about a small town in Calif., that discovered they were paying 3 officials exorbitant salaries...and asked for their resignations. (The city leaders are the ones that approved the salaries in the first place., and have also put a law on the books to allow them to pay themselves whatever they wanted, without taxpayer approval). While local officials are attempting to save money by cutting services, I notice no mention of removing any top level jobs. Here's a thought....if you are cutting back on hours of operation for the Civic Center, and getting rid of personnel, why do you need a Director? Surely that job can be done by someone with a lower pay scale. If the director's job is to make the center more user friendly, and bring in more revenue, the director has failed to perform her duties. The study that was recently done indicates that the center should be made more available to a wider variety of paying activities, the study didn't advise cutting hours of operation, or personnel. The parks/recreation director duties could be done by one of the aldermen, or, by the current assistant director...Perhaps the city could ask the Sheriff's Office how much it would cost to contract them for law enforcement, and do away with the city's police dept. Most of the officers would become Deputies, and the city would possibly save money, by not having to provide pension/benefits for them. Since there is no county fire dept.,there is no alternative...the city will have to keep its Fire Dept. One more thought...I see the citizens of Lakewood Tn. are voting on whether to dissolve their cities charter, and become part of Metro Davidson County. That could be an option for locals to check into, if the city continues to operate at a deficit. While it is nice to say we haven't raised taxes in x amount of years, one has to see it isn't working. If the city continues to spend money it doesn't have, either you raise taxes to cover expenses, or consider dissolving the city (or remove the elected officials from office), and hope for better from their replacements.

To: Upset Annie...I agree with Zeb & confused...Jail is not supposed to be 'fun' or a day care center for poor misunderstood relatives. If you have paid any attention to the court reports in the Standard, you'll see most of the offenders are sentenced to probation. Only the most egregious crimes get the jail sentences...If your poor little darling was unable to keep the conditions of his probation, he deserves to be incarcerated. At least he's not out on the street committing any more crimes against society. It is unfortunate that your relative has to serve time in jail, but it is because of his own actions. Let's hope that this gives him time to relfect on his chosen path in life, and comes out rehabilitated, and begins to be a better person. If not, he should be put back into jail....and not a county facility...perhaps he should be sent to a State Prison facility. There he may learn that jail isn't as nice as what he's been used to. Your little darling can't keep blaming others for his mistakes. He did a crime....he does the time. Maybe he'll grow up.

Get real, our child support office is so political its totally ridiculous...they only go after the ones they want to and the rest of those who don't pay child support just go on with their merry little life because our child support office doesn't really care if they pay or not (unless its someone THEY want to pay) :)

I believe they should be fed well and have enough to drink, a bed to sleep in and any necessities of life. I do not belive they should be given extras on taxpayers dollars. Dear Upset Auntie, I get the impression that your precious little inmate might be entitled to extra snacks between meals while on vacation at the Warren County Hotel. If I had my way it would be the highway with a big 25 pound ball attached to a chain with the other end fastened securely to the ankle. It would be reveille at 0430/4:30 AM with breakfast at 4:45 AM. Each inmate would work a hard laborus 8 hour day with an additional 2 hours of physical fitness training followed by 2 hours of Health & Personal Understanding. Lunch at 12 noon with supper at 5 PM. No snacks in between. No cigarettes (health hazard). Each resident would be required to earn their GED inside or as a condition of their probation and within a certain length of time. Violate and you're back inside. No GED or high school diploma - no drivers license. Employment, weekly drug testing, weekly meeting with P.O., residence, and paid up child support are conditions for release. Residents would also be obligated and required to bay back the county for the costs of all medical, food, and lodging for all periods of time while on the inside. Watch out for those administration, laundry, and processing fees because they mount up quickly. It's not intended to be fun, that's why they call it jail. Think of the residents as very fortunate with TV and air conditioning. Drug dealers and child molestors would have no TV or A/C. If you don't want that environment then walk the straight and narrow otherwise don't expect milk and cookies at 3 PM.

And I would bet my last bag of noodles that your family member is a repeat offender like a large percent of them are.

Well mcminnville aldermen have really showed how dumb they are. They can buy new patrol cars and hire cops when times are hard but at the fire dept's expense. If it was not for our firemen downtown would be no more, and they did it with cheap and dangerous equipment, too. To the four firemen losing their jobs, and the rest of the mcminnville fire dept, thank you for always serving us well. I am sure that there is a department deserving of your skill and knowledge that would hire you. Mcminnville is going downhill fast, and its not because of lack of money. Its because of dumb and reckless management. I am ashamed to call mcminnville home, and you should be, too.

Dear Upset Auntie, Boo Hoo Boo Hoo! Who cares about what coffee or ramen noodles cost an inmate? If they had not been dealing drugs, thieving, cheating, beating people, etc. they would not have been in jail to begin with. I also have a family member there, and I personally hope it's so bad he will learn a lesson. I don't care if he has coffee, and cigs, or not! He has stolen from almost everyone in the family, taken advantage of every effort to be kind just to support a drug habit. I think they should have to work at hard physical labor while they are jailed. They should have adequate nutrition, nothing extra. And so many times they will either fake an illness or injure themselves just to get more drugs. People need to be more concerned with their victims, not these jerks!

Well the citizens of Mcminnville have lost all the way around. You have allowed the City Safety Committee to take away 4 firefighters/first responders without opposition. This means that the great ISO Rating of 3 which the city had will now go to a 6 or maybe even a 7. For the tax payers of the city this means your homeowners insurance will probably double in cost. It would have been cheaper for them to take the $ 0.96 tax increase in most cases. This also means the firefighters medical program will surely be shut down. Without this program in place seven more people would have lost their lives in our great city we call home. What is totally suprising to me is no one that these guys provided medical aid to responded to the firefighters call for help. No one came out and fought for these men who always help us whenever we need them !!! Shame on the Safety Committee and the People of McMinnville for you have truly let your fire dept down this time around !!!!

I agree with the person who posted on 7/19 about requiring dogs of a certain weight to be confined behind fences. Dogs can and do pose a serious threat. This is really a potentially life-threatening problem which needs to be addressed. Safety and prevention should be our primary concern. Freedom thrives when regulations ensure that everyone acts in a responsible manner to respect the safety and rights of others. Good fences make good neighbors and good neighbors' dogs.

ref article 7/19 Dogs: The city aldermen should never have the authorifor mandatory spaying or neutering of dogs in the city. If the dog catcher (DC) picks one up with a collar then the owner has 3-5 days to pick them up or else its the big siesta AND if the owner can't prove parvo & dystemper & rabies then the owner pays for bed & breakfast and medical for fluffy BEFORE they get them. If they choose not to then its the big siesta. If you want to clean up Warren County its easy - it takes guts and initiative - and it takes people working together. Everyone wants someone else to solve your problems. I gues the words like integrity, initiative, and motivation are not spolen too many times here. Shame. If you are not part of the solution and you whine then you are definitely part of the problem!! Do something constructive.

To Upset Auntie: Look at it this way...if people in the county jail are upset at their treatment and the cost of things in the commissary....don't do something to put yourself there. It's as simple as that. Nobody makes them commit a crime. Should they get the basics? Yes. That is food, water, an orange jumpsuit. They should have to pay for extras. Why should I have to pay for it? I didn't do anything but I have to foot the bill to care for them. Perhaps when they get out they could...oh, I don't know...get a job...or if they can't find a job...volunteer. Make an effort to better themselves.

I agree with James Clark's recent editorial that we need mandatory spaying/neutering for dogs. The aldermen should pass such an ordinance and while they are at it, they should also stipulate that dogs over a specified weight must be confined behind fences. The aldermen would be doing joggers, bicyclers, meter men, postal workers, delivery men, neighbors, and our community's children a great service.

As for the dress code, I agree with some of what has been said but also think the school goes way too far saying they can not have patches or any holes in the jeans....many of the jeans today have tiny holes with patches underneath that show absolutely 0 skin. Lets be reasonable.

Why bother printing the high school dress code if the high school isn't going to enforce it? Actually, there should be no need for a dress code. If parents would have more control over what their kids wear...it wouldn't be needed. There are plenty of ways for kids to "express themselves" without resorting to clothing that has a pot leaf on it (seen at the high school at the beginning and end of the day), pants hanging to their knees and clothing so tight nothing is left to the imagination. I don't know what is wrong with parents but they shouldn't hold the school responsible for overseeing the kids wardrobes. They are there to educate the kids. It's obvious that in many households the kids rule the roost.

If you do the crime you gotta do the time.. #2, I agree the crosswalk in front of walmart isn't for loading a cart full of groceries but I am guilty of picking up my 80 year old mother at the crosswalk (with her buggy of groceries) so she doesn't have to walk all the way to the car.....your opinion?

The expectant mother parking space is located near the General Merchandice enterance. It is one spot marked for expectant mothers/pharmacy patients with a limit of 20 minutes (I believe).

Submitted By: k Submitted: 7/15/2010
The expecting mom parking spot is a good idea, Bi Lo had one before Foodland bought them. I think the parking spots for Adults with children would not be feasible. There are way too many adults with children. I feel there's too many handicapped spaces now. There needs to be a crack down on the abuse of the handicap plagues. If the person that is handicapped is not in the vehicle that does not give the able-body driver the right to use it. I witnessed a UCART bus parked in the handicapped van space at Walmart. There were no passengers aboard, or in Walmart, only the driver who I'm sure is not handicapped. One more thing, the front of the store (crosswalk) is not for loading a cart full of groceries because your too lazy to walk to your car. It is for loading heavy items, (TVs, grills, etc.)

ATTENTION ALL CITIZENS IN THE CITY OF McMINNVILLE. YOU HAVE SOMETHING FAR, FAR GREATER TO WORRY ABOUT THEN WALMART PARKING PLACES! TO THE ELDERLY MAN THAT FELL HEAD FIRST DOWN THE STEPS AT GREEN ACRES APTS. I SAY TO YOU "IT LOOKS LIKE YOU MIGHT HAVE TO LAY THERE ON THE SIDEWALK FOR A LITTLE LONGER NEXT TIME WITHOUT MEDICAL ATTENTION.THAT'S IF FIRE STATION #2 IS CLOSED AND IT LOOKS LIKE CITY LEADERSHIP HAS A COUPLE OF ALDERMEN THAT ARE READY TO SHUT THE DOORS TODAY TO SAVE A BUCK! TO THE MAN WHO WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE AND NOT BREATHING JUST A WEEK OR SO AGO BY TWO CITY FIREMEN, WHO THE DOCTOR AND PARAMEDIC STATED CLEARLY WOULD HAVE DIED IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE QUICK RESPONSE AND CPR PERFORMED BY OUR CITY FIREMEN WORKING AS FIRST RESPONDERS, I SAY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY " I TRULY FEEL SORRY FOR YOU IF THE SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN! FIREMEN WANT TO HELP THE COMMUNITY, BUT IT'S OUT OF THEIR CONTROL!" TO THE FRANTIC MOTHER WHO CALLED 911 WHEN SHE FOUND HER BABY NOT BREATHING BECAUSE IT WAS WRAPPED UP AND SMOTHERED IN A BLANKET IN A CRIB AND FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AND GOT THE CHILD BACK BREATHING..I SAY TO YOU .."YOU WERE LUCKY TO HAVE THEM! IF 8 FIREMEN ARE VICTIMS OF A LAY-OFF, THE NEXT MOTHER WON'T BE SO FORTUNATE." I CAN'T IMAGINE THE FRUSTRATION FIREMEN MUST FEEL AFTER MASTERING LIFE SAVING SKILLS THAT THE CITIZENS OF McMINNVILLE PAID FOR THEM TO HAVE , THEN GOING OUT AND USING THEM SAVING LIVES IN ACTUAL EMERGENCIES, AND THEN HAVE THAT TAKEN BACK! FIRST RESPONDERS HAVE LEARNED MORE THAN BASIC LIFE SAVING SKILLS. AED,CPR,BVM &ORAL AIRWAY TECHNIQUES ARE SOME OF THEIR SKILLS. HERE'S A FEW MORE. SPLINTING BROKEN BONES WHEN A BABY FALLS OFF THE FRONT PORCH. AIRWAY SUCTION WHEN YOUR GRANDFATHER CAN'T BREATHE OR IF YOU HAVE A FACIAL INJURY IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND AREN'T GETTING AIR IN YOUR LUNGS. CERVICAL COLLARS AND SPINE BOARD USAGE. SKILLS FOR SPECIAL PATIENTS LIKE WOMEN GIVING BIRTH,PEDIATRIC,GERIACTRIC, AND OBSTETRIC NEEDS. WHAT IT MEANS IN A NUTSHELL IS THAT LIFE SAVING PRE-HOSPITAL CARE FOR THE CITIZENS OF McMINNVILLE IS GOING TO BE GREATLY REDUCED WHEN THESE FIREMEN GO. THE FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM IN THE U.S. WAS STARTED IN 1979 AS AN OUTGROWTH FROM THE "CRASH INJURY MANAGEMENT" COURSE. OUR FIRE DEPT FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH OTHER MUNICIPALITIES AND TRULY STARTED HELPING OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY AND NOW THEY ARE GOING TO SLAM THE DOOR ON PROGRESS. THE HANDS ON THE NEW CLOCK DOWNTOWN ARE MOVING BACKWARDS FOLKS. BACK TO AROUND THE MID 80'S. ALSO, I AM AWARE OF OSHA AND THEIR SUGGESTIONS ABOUT FIREFIGHTER SAFETY. THESE SUGGESTION WHEN THEY REACH A COURT ARE THEN VIEWED AS LAW. JUST ASK ANY CITY LAWYER IN THE PAST WHO HAS HAD THEIR CLIENTS CONFRONTED BY THESE TWO QUESTIONS DURING TRIAL.... " WHY DIDN'T YOU FOLLOW THIS OSHA REGULATION? DON'T YOU REALIZE THAT THIS OVERSIGHT CAUSED A PERSONS DEATH OR PERMANANT INJURY?" LAYING OFF 8 FIREMEN WILL PUT THE CITY IN A BAD POSITION MORALLY AND LEGALLY. IF ONLY TWO FIREMEN ARRIVE AT A STRUCTURE FIRE TO SAVE A FAMILY IN A BURNING HOUSE FULL OF SMOKE, HOW LONG DO THE OPPOSING ALDERMEN THINK IT'S GOING TO TAKE FOR THOSE FIREMEN, WITH 80 POUNDS OF GEAR ON, TO RUN OUT OF AIR AND ENERGY STRUGGLING TO GET THAT MAN AND WIFE AND THEIR THREE KIDS OUT?? NOT LONG!!HOW MUCH TIME DOES THAT FAMILY HAVE UNTIL THEY ARE ALL DECEASED?? MOST FIREMEN WILL GO FOR THE CHILDREN FIRST. THAT'S THE WAY I WOULD WANT IT IF I WAS TRAPPED IN MY HOUSE. WHAT A TERRIBLE POSITION FOR OUR CITY FIREMEN TO BE IN. HAVING TO PLAY GOD IN THE DOORWAY OF FLAME-FILLED HOUSE ASKING THEMSELVES WHO WILL LIVE? WHO WILL NOT? ALL OF THIS BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE HELP THEY NEED! ALSO WHAT ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE TWO FIREMEN? WHAT IF THEY GET TRAPPED INSIDE WITH NO BACKUP OUTSIDE TO GET THEM OUT. FIREMEN GET DISORIENTED AND TRAPPED ALL THE TIME PEOPLE! WATCH THE NEWS!IF A FATALITY OCCURS BECAUSE OF THE CITY'S MANPOWER REDUCTION AND UNSAFE TACTICS AND POOR EQUIPMENT, THE CITY WILL BE OWNED BY FIREFIGHTERS WIDOWS. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT. ANYBODY WHO HAS BEEN HELPED BY THE CITY FD NEEDS TO SHOW UP AND BE HEARD AT UPCOMING ALDERMAN MEETINGS AT CITY HALL. GET THERE EARLY BEFORE CITY HALL TRYS TO FILL ALL OF THE SEATS SO YOU CAN'T BE HEARD!

Just reviewed the aerial photos from Mapquest of the Wal Mart parking lot and have come up with a couple of suggestions: (1) each of the parking rows are alternating up & down so keep that the same.(2)since both top parking lot entrances and exits are connected to the upper lot or high lot road then only have the upper road for the entrance and exit. (3) the right lane headed east infront of the store close it off like a walkway and no more traffic using that lane for leaving, Now traffic must use the high road. (4) Each of the parking isles take turns up/down/up/down so we will use them the same way when rounding the isle to go to the nest isle, the only difference will be no straight to east exit on the lower road infront of the store. (5) emergency vehicles have right of way in either direction at any time. If there are any personnel from Wal Mart who would like to discuss this I would be more than happy to offer my suggestions which would increase safety for their customers.

I was just wondering how people can drive an auto if they can't read? When turning into Wal Mart the first thing you encounter from the light is a sign that says "NO LEFT TURN" and 1 out of 10 turn left and with people coming down the hill to the stop sign to exit, one of these days we are going to lose someone to stupidity and with our luck there will be 3-4 little ones in the victim's car. Carl posted that motorists must stop or be fined but the walkways are not crosswalks. Crosswalks are on city streets. Walkways are infront of businesses. The other thing to consider is that customers to Wal Mart do not always use the walkways but walk everywhere. Ever hear of tickets for j-walking? City losing lots of $$.

Sound familiar to W’s “go shopping”…where’s the outrage? Where’s the pics of Oslime drenched with crude? Where’s Brad Pitt? Sean Penn? Could it be a red state issue? Kinda like Nashville? With the lack of protest, here I go: I will be protesting the recently imposed “Pasty White” Tan Tax as a racist tax imposed on well, pasty white people. I also am going to protest the recent assignment of the exact same lawyer that defended the American Taliban (now part of Oslimes inner circle) in representing the US Govt against the Great State of Arizona. I am also protesting this Administrations sanctions on Eritrea, a small country in the Horn of Africa based on fabricated charges manufactured by this young nation's traditional enemies, especially Ethiopia, with regards to Somalia…of course, Somalia loves us right? Also top on my protest list is the O u r so wrong in telling Israel where they can or can’t build…in their own country! I am protesting why the IRS will become the main agency for determining who has an "acceptable" health insurance plan; for finding and punishing those who don't have such a plan; for subsidizing individual health insurance costs through the issuance of a tax credits; and for enforcing the rules on those who attempt to opt out, abuse, or game the system. A substantial portion of H.R. 3200, the House health care bill, is devoted to amending the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 in order to give the IRS the authority to perform these new duties. With the Space Shuttle missions coming to an end, I protest the new mission NASA has been given by the Obama thugocracy of Seeing to it that the Muslim nations get help in making them feel good about their historic contribution to science and math and engineering….uh? Lastly, I protest the fact that while having control of Congress for 4 years and total control of all for 2, the liberal Democrats can pass any bill they want with no problems….they continue to blame anyone but themselves: Financial Reform speaks noting to FANNIE AND FREDDIE = Dodd and Frank and project $1BILLION in losses this year alone… but at least we have true intelligence with the botox babe herself and # 3 in charge: Pelosi: Unemployment checks are the fastest way to create jobs…or, “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it”…I protest the fact that we are stuck on stupid.

I think the city or county police need to patrol the walmart parking lot more often, walmart has signs posted for cars to slow down while people are trying to cross, to enter the store. on wed. 07 2010. ime and my wife had to wait while trying to cross in the crosswalk area. but there was a little old lady about 80 years old crossing. and a car almost ran her over next time i will take a video of the crosswalk area and send it to you. plus there are parking areas for people with children but yet people still park in the firelane right in front of the store, making it hard to see around then when you are coming out of walmart to get back to your car. someone needs to check the state laws about crosswalk areas. and you will find that there is a law that states motorist must stop for pedestrons at the crosswalk with fines from $50.00 to $250.00 and sence the county and city need money in their budgets let them start doing their jobs a little better. patrol walmart parking lots!!!

The wheel tax is paid by everyone who buys a car tag-it is a county tax(paid by city and county residents) I think the problem a lot of city residents have is that 60% of the people(including children) who use the pool, civic center and ball fields are county residents who pay nothing toward the upkeep of any of the city facilities. The fees charged for these should cover all the costs of the upkeep and the county should pay more since the city residents have already paid taxes for these facilities.

I for one am tired of city residents complaining about county residents not paying enough taxes. We are not the ones who keep voting for the same fools who obviously can't balance a budget. You want the county people to pick up the slack and pay the difference. Maybe county people should go on strike and stop shopping in McMinnville. We have to pay that insane wheel tax just like everyone else, it makes no sense to have a tax higher than the price of what your actually buying. When you lose your ball league's and recreation, you'll only have yourselves to blame. Remember who YOU voted for.

How about getting rid of one of the high paying jobs at the Civic Center. Maybe cutting the director would save 3 or 4 blue-collar jobs over the there. Their are several working there right now that could run the place with a little help from the city administrator. With what we are paying Mr. Rutherford he could help out with the administrator duties at the Civic Center. If you're going to make cuts then start at the top. Just a thought!

Zeb, If you live in the city you pay city taxes and you also pay county taxes. We do have trash pickup, but we also pay for it on our water bill each month. I do think some county residents don't realize that city residents pay twice as much in taxes as they do.

Submitted By: Brat Submitted: 7/2/2010
Zeb, the city of McMinnville lies inside the Warren County boundary lines. Inside these boundary lines, they have their own boundaries called the McMinnville City Limits. People outside the city limits pay only county taxes, while those inside the city limits pay both county and city taxes. Inside the city, they have the McMinnville City Police Dept. as their primary law enforcement, have fire protection, city water and sewer, and trash pickup. The governing body is the mayor and board of aldermen and the city administrator. The city also pays for parks and recreation. People in the county are served by the Warren County Sheriff's office, pay for fire protection from community volunteer fire departments, and pay for trash pick up or take their own trash to a convenience center. The water is provided by water utility districts, and septic systems are used instead of a sewer system. Their governing body is the county executive and the county commissioners. The county funds the school system.

Dear "Poll" 6/29, I am slightly confused. Why do the city residents have to pay the city tax? What benefits do city residents receive that the county residents don't? Why is there a difference? What is the benefit of residing in the city limits? Is it trash pick up? What is the reason?

For those who are "getting rid" of their pets: Please check out any person or rescue you give your pet to. A legitimate rescue will make sure your pet is fully vetted before it is adopted out. Beware of anyone who advertises on LSN that they will take your pet. Beware of anyone who warehouses your pet with dozens of other pets in the back yard. Stay away from anyone who won't let you see their facility. If they won't let you see their place...they have something to hide. The best thing you can do is stop the problem by spaying/neutering your pets before you have to find a home for that litter.

The poll the Southern Standard conducted showed that the majority wouldn't care if the city cut out summer baseball leagues. Why do people think the county residents shouldn't pay more to play ball or use any city facility?? The city taxpayers have already paid city taxes so why should they pay the same amount as the county to play ball? The city needs to take in enough in fees to cover all the expenses for the whole ball season. If parents don't want to pay that amount their child does not have to play ball. Yes, ball should be fun and children need to have activites for the summer but someone has to pay for them and it shouldn't always have to be the city tax payers.

My 28 year old son proudly served our country in the U.S. Army for 4 years which included 2 Iraqi tours. As a Combat Medic I can tell you the things he had to see were not pleasant. But praises to God, he came home to us safely in January 2010. He came home to his 1 year old son and loving fiancé settling in to a small but perfect home for he and his family while he attends school to become an RN. I AM ANGRY! Why? Because my son survived some of the most horrific situations in Iraq, comes home to our wonderful United States and his home is broken into and he is robbed! Someone came into their home took their TV and other electronics but took one of his most prized possessions…his BLACK OVATION GUITAR. Oh this was not just any guitar; this guitar was signed by all of his comrades that he served with in Iraq, the people who stood beside him, watched his back all while he was doing what he loves best, PROUDLY SERVING HIS COUNTRY AND CARING FOR THE WOUNDED. I’M ANGRY because each of those names on that guitar will not mean a thing to THE CRIMINAL that robbed him! THE CRIMINAL will not care that it had to be cleaned up because of the spattered blood on it! THE CRIMINAL will not care that MY SON has lost something so emotionally significant to him! THE CRIMINAL violated my son and his family! Keep the TV! keep all the other stuff! But give back the guitar Give my son his peace of mind.

If you feel that $50 is too cheap because you paid more in Florida then that is your problem. Parents pay 50 plus the cost of uniforms, minus the shirt and hat. To some parents this small fee is no problem, but to others it is costly. Sports are suppose to be a fun activity for the children and not another money pit for the parents. Also, county residents should not have to pay more. The city really needs to come together and look at what they are spending their money on. There are other expenses I am sure they can cut. If we take away the ball league, what will our children have left to do? McMinnville needs to put more money into youth activities instead of some peoples pockets or clocks downtown.

It is true that any dog (or cat) with teeth can and sometimes will bite. That being said, I would rather take my chances with a small animal than one that has the potential to kill as do some of the larger breeds. Pit bulls and rottweilers are at the top of this list as being the most dangerous.(I found this on a list of insurance risks for home owners.) In 2009 there were 30 deaths from dog attacks in the U.S. Pit bulls were responsible for 10. That's 33%. In fact, 77% of dog attacks are by family pets or a friend's dog. So, if you want a pit bull, keep it, but by all means, keep it away from me and my children. Thanks:D

If $50 per child can't sustain a summer ball league, the Parks and Recreation Dept. needs to tune in and give Dave Ramsey a listen before planning their next budget. Or maybe the city leaders should get on the phone and ask Manchester how to build and maintain a viable Parks and Recreation Department.

The only problem with Grandpa's argument is this: 501(C)3 status does not mean a rescue/shelter is legitimate. It only means you've jumped through government hoops to collect donations. As far as limiting pets...for some 20 is manageable for another 1 might be 1 too many. Licensing pets is a good idea. Reduced fees for altered pets is a great idea. The money collected could to towards a shelter that actually functions as a shelter and not a killing facility.

I think the city should continue offering baseball for the kids, but the cost they charge per child should cover all the expenses-shirts, umpires, upkeep of fields, etc. If this means each child pays $150-200 then so be it. The city should not have to go into the red for kids to play ball. You play, you pay.

Who has a problem with the dogs and cats in the county/city? If a governing body is complaining then why not have every dog owner and every cat owner get their pets a $25 licence for each pet and a current rabies shot for each. Failure to do so by ________date will allow the city/county to start writing tickets. If the pet has been spayed or neutered then the license will be $5. There is more than one way to solve the problem. If you are running a shelter then you better have a business license and/or be a 501 c-3. The other way is a family of 4 can only ave 4 pets without a business license. More than 4 then its ticket time & shots & rabies etc etc. Livestock doesn't count. Wake up! Hellooo?????????

This may not make it into this discussion but my opinion anyway. These men are citizens of this coutry and they should not have thier rights taken away because someone is dating an illegal resident. We have tried to become so politally correct that we are taking away rights of citizens of our own country. The woman that worked in the plant with these men should not have felt threatened if she is legal. It was not directed to her. Anywhere else in the world if you cross over the border illegally you get jailed, shot or you're never heard from again. It this great country they get a job, welfare, food stamps, subsidized rent, free health care, free education, and the right to carry thier flag while protesting that they don't get enough respect. Something ain't right!

New Resident, not all women in factories are forced to work there because some man has left her with problems. There are actually married couples that work at Bridgestone. I would suppose because it pays well, and they are both trying to have a good income for their family. I think if she felt threatened by ICE caps, it was a guilty conscience. And a "real man" would not be breaking laws by being here illegally! We need to enforce current immigration laws, and anyone who helps an illegal alien should be charged as well. It is not heartless to expect everyone to obey laws!

Submitted By: checkingitout Submitted: 6/23/2010
NewResident: The solution for the entire situation and there would be no need for ICE, is to round up all the illegals and send them back to where they came from. If they want to be here, they can go through the proper process, just like our forefathers did. This is America. It is a privilege to be an American. People just can't walk in, take or demand what they want. Dear My thought on the ICE cap is they can wear it and she can date anyone she wants.

Dear "checkingitout". "Why should anyone be afraid at Bridgestone, they have security..." I say in turn using this logic...why should anyone be afraid anywhere, we have police... I understand this knee jerk reaction but reality is quite different, right? The hats intimdate this female. Do you deny that? They are worn to intimdate, perhaps not specifically her, but they are worn to intimidate. Why should anyone having to deal with a challenging daily work life have to have that intimdation added into their stress just so the guys can wear their ICE hats at work? And why can't she get picked up by this (illegal alien) guy after work without the ICE hats in his face? Is that the way to handle this? ICE hats and intimdating co-workers? What if she marries this guy and he applis for legal status? Does that mean he can wear an ICE hat to Bridgestone when he picks her up then...I want a photo of that...maybe he can then apply for a manager's position over the ICE hat guys...interesting...what goes around comes around... Dear "Do I look illegal?" I don't think we are discussing "delicate snowflakes too special to have a job" as you wrote. We are discussing a woman I don’t personally know but I suspect is one of many women who are forced to work in hot, smoke filled, smelly, noisy and physically challenging manufacturing jobs so they may provide a good life for their children, while working with men who try and make her afraid. The reference I made about “real men” was by a man to men. Appropriately so, as it is to remind them that treating a woman this way makes them little, perhaps less a man than the man she has turned to, the man they attempt to make her afraid to see. These women are not there because they are educated or not educated. They are there because a man left them in a difficult life changing situation that leads them to work these difficult jobs simply because the man in their life was not a "real man" but instead a self centered boy who left them high and dry. These real world situations and the fear a woman may have in being forced to work a difficult manufacturing job among good ole boys wearing ICE hats has much more to do with the lack of a real man in her life earlier and the lack of real men in her workplace and less to do with her desires or education or abilities. That's reality and more the norm. But I am glad you are well educated and happy. Perhaps some of that will someday help you appreciate other women who are not so fortunate in life's twists and turns but certainly as good as you in all ways and the "real men" who appreciate them also. Submitted By: Do I look illegal? Submitted: 6/22/2010
You don't have to be illegal to be afraid of the clear racist undertones made by those wearing these hats. Bridgestone needs to step up and say that NO hats are allowed. You cannot wear your own tshirt, you cannot wear your shorts, you cannot wear your flipflops, its not a far jump to make to say you cannot wear a hat. When you're working for an employer you have no right to "express yourself" with your choice of clothing. Bridgestone needs to make this statement, because obviously these "adults" cannot make responsible clothing decisions on their own. New Resident, Bridgestone pays very well, and if a woman wants to work there, she has every right. Its 2010 and I know that I am a successful, well educated woman and my choice of a work place should not ever be qualified by what the "real men" in my life choose to do with theirs. I would hate to think that people look at everything I have accomplished in my life and say, "Well if there was a REAL MAN in her life, she could be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen birthin babies!" A real man knows that women are fully functioning members of society and aren't delicate snowflakes too special to have a job.

Submitted By: checkingitout Submitted: 6/22/2010
New Resident: Why would anyone be afraid at Bridgestone? They have security and will take care of whatever arises. If she was truly afraid, why did she even tell anyone she was dating an illegal? Also, if she was doing her job, she wouldn't have time to be worried about who was wearing what. I am certain the employees were just wearing the caps in support of something that was important to them, and probably didn't even think of it being an issue at work.

Submitted By: NewResident Submitted: 6/22/2010
Dear "Heartless". My posting was concerned with the legal female citizen being afraid of those wearing ICE hats at work and suggested one should not wear them at work for that reason. My posting does not discuss the illegal himself, only the legal female employee who is afraid of males wearing ICE hats at work and suggests the males are Bridgestone employees and not ICE employees and perhaps it would be best to leave the ICE hats in the truck while working. I'm sure many of us feel as you do about illegal workers but that has nothing to do with wearing ICE hats at work and making a female employee working hard to make a living afraid. I think you should care if the female is afraid. You should instead focus on leading in making this country a better place for legal workers and focus less on making hard working females afraid and wearing hats. If there were more real men then so many females whould not have to work in factories to support their children and turn to illegal workers who do know how to be men better than the American men of today, perhaps? What say you, "Heartless"?

Brat: While it is true that a bite from a Pittie or a Rottie will do far more damage, you have to look at the total of all dog bites to find out if they are more or less likely to bite. The vast majority of dog bites go unreported. 50% of dog bites occur OFF of the owner's property. Boys, aged 5-9, have the highest rate of bites. UNNEUTERED MALES are the most likely to bite. Dogs that have been chained are shown to be more aggressive. What does all this tell us? An awful lot of people are irresponsible and have no business owning a dog. If you don't confine, (NOT BY CHAINING), don't neuter or spay your dog, don't socialize your dog, you are causing the problems. For those who think they are over-regulated...it shouldn't even take a law to make people be responsible but apparently it does. So be it.

Submitted By: k Submitted: 6/22/2010
I completely agree, Mcminnville like a lot of other towns has a pet population problem. Responsible owners need to spay their animals. BUT I don't see this happening if the price for spaying or neutering is not lowered. I had our dog spayed and it cost $100. What about the older ladies with their 5 cats? They would never be able to fix all of their precious babies on a fixed income. IN reality a pet is considered property therefore I really don't see how the city can dictate what you can and can't do with your property. On another note; Pit Bulls have the reputation that they do for a reason. I feel there's something about this breed of dog that naturally has more aggression than other dogs.

Submitted By: Submitted: 6/21/2010
Heath, Nobody has said anything about pit bulls. The article in the paper didn't say anything bad about pit bulls. That said, there are far too many pitties and far too many of them in the wrong hands. Pitties are great dogs...but only when in the hands of responsible people. Right now...there is NO REASON to breed any dog but especially not pit bulls. Take a good look at what dogs are in the shelters both here in McMinnville and Tennessee and across the country....you find literally thousands of them and the vast majority of those will die. There is no excuse for breeding any dog or cat. Period.

Submitted By: Brat Submitted: 6/21/2010
Heath, I took your advice and researched pit bulls. In 2000, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention published the results of a study. Results:238 deaths 76 or 36% from pit bulls; 44 or 18% from rottweilers. conclusion; since it is not likely that they represented the same percentage of total dogs in the U.S., there does seem to be a breed specific problem. In the Clifton Report of 2009 results:345 deaths, 159 or 46% were from pit bulls and 70 or 20% were from rottweilers, rottweilers and rottweiler mixes accounted for 66% of all deaths. In serious injuries, Pit bulls accounted for 778; rottweilers 244; German shepherds accounted for 9 deaths, and 50 injuries. Now you tell me your research as to their safety. My source is the wickpedia online encyclopedia.

Most spay/neuter ordinances have clauses for planned breeding. This is for show breeders mostly. Most anyone around here who breeds is only doing it for money. These ordinances have an option for applying for a breeding permit for each animal to be bred. Fair enough. And again...the Constitution does not give one the right to own animals. I see someone quoted the 4th Amendment I believe...that covers illegal searches. Most of the time you really don't have to look too hard to find the ones who have no business with an animal.

Submitted By: Responsible Pet Owner Submitted: 6/18/2010
As a pet owner myself, I believe all pet owners owe it to their animals to be responsible and have their animals spayed and neutered. Not having this done is irresponsible on most parts. I am sick and tired of people breeding their animals over and over again, because they want to give a puppy a good home, how about not, most of the time its about money, or because you are selfish and don't want to pay the money. How about the one's you think you are giving them a good home, but you really aren't? Most just do it for the money, but many are selfish and would rather their animal just be let to run about and end up pregnant or getting another pregnant. I have 4 cats, all are spayed and neutered, the same with my 3 dogs. All my animals have been rescued from places/homes because of this kind of abuse. Imagine finding a box full of kittens left under a car in a pool of oil at the grocery store? I can, because I saved those kittens, and gave them to family members that could care for them and give them a proper home, and I still have mine and I love him to pieces. Imagine having kittens being born into filthy conditions? I can, because I saved one. I've also adopted to save a pet. My little puppy was rescued from a filthy barn, who had worms because of improper nutrition and no water. My mother rescued her two puppies, because someone decided to throw them over a bridge in a bag. God must have been looking over those puppies to let them survive. My other 2 dogs were rescued off of a filthy farm where these people just bred, and bred these animals. I can understand without breeding we wouldn't have animals, but please, for goodness sake, it makes me ill to watch an Animal Planet show about animal rescuers saving these poor little creatures because of the selfish acts of others. These people are hanious. Unfortunately, for those that are responsible with how they breed you must pay the price of others that commit hanious crimes with these animals. However, making a law to make you spay and neuter your animal is quite alright with me at the same time. Sure you should have a say, but you know what, these animals will be thanking you in the long run, because these animals are not meant to be breeding machines, and then left abandoned because you have to move suddenly or you can no longer afford to feed them. They did not ask to be brought into this world, and they certainly did not ask to be treated in such bad ways. Like children, animals are just as much as a blessing. They depend on you for the proper unconditional love that they deserve.

What a bunch of WHINERS city residents are! They put the SAME incompetent people in office time after time, refuse to attend public meetings, or take any proactive steps to make the town better! Then the solution to the problem is to get county funds. So, I guess we'd all be in the same boat and that would make it all better? It sickens me to see the waste in the city, but I am a county resident. Their solution is always to try more annexation, raise taxes, or somehow put their hands in the county pockets. When you are low on funds, DON'T SPEND EVEN MORE! It is almost 100% impossible to spend your way out of debt. Oh, and as for spaying animals, do it and quit dropping them off on country roads for other people to deal with. Just because you don't see the problem any longer doesn't mean it's no longer there.

Spaying and Neutering your pets is GREAT because down the road it's SAD at what can happen to the puppies or kittens that are left behind that either did NOT sale or didn't get to be given away! But to OUR VETS here in Warren County, I'm only making a suggestion maybe lower the price a little bit more reasonable for families to get the services done,I know it basically goes by weight, and I'm NOT at all saying to do it for FREE,just lower it a little especially for people with more than one animal etc...,etc..., anyways you get my point! Another thing that also annoys me,not that ANYONE cares is how people think they KNOW it ALL needs to take a step back, because you should ALWAYS know what your talking about before making accusations on someone/something,if YOU don't know ask that person give them a call, but DON'T say they are someone/something they are NOT get your facts straight first!I hope everyone's having a wonderful and safe summer! :)

The Constitution gives me the right to own pets an protect them from 'regulations'. I quote: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." My pet qualifies as the "thing" not subject to be "seized" without probably cause as discussed by our founding fathers..."probably cause" is not a "regulation". I AM FREE. DON'T TREAD ON ME

Just a couple of thoughts.....1st of all, I do not EVER receive a tax refund. I pay more when I file taxes. I am not, however, raising children at a low income job. I believe some of those people who get tax refunds are playing the system while others are struggling to get by. Those who are doing the best they can and providing for their children, I have no problem with the tax refunds they receive. As for spaying and neutering animals, I always have mine done but I pay about $100 everytime I have a cat spayed or neutered. I KNOW many people who can not afford to pay that. #1, I believe the price should be more reasonable and #2, I think we may be getting into personal rights on that subject.

I read the Bridgestone employee's editorial page letter on June 16. It expressed concern he and two others were not allowed to wear ICE hats at work. According to this person, the company is concerned about an employee who dates an illegal ("undocumented" in left language) because she the hats made her uncomfortable and maybe a little afraid. The letter asked for opinions and I never shirk away from such invitations so here goes... I think we should remember that she is indeed afraid. I don't think she is making that up, and she has a right to work there unafraid. Your hats make her afraid so perhaps you should leave them in the truck when at work becaue of that reason, not because Bridgestone wants you too. I think Bridgestone has an obligation to keep their employees from being afraid to work there. I ask you to reflect on that and reconsider your position. Thanks for your time, gentlemen. BTW, I happen to agree with the Arizona anti-illegal alien law also.

I REMEMBER THE DAY THAT MCMINNVILLE FIRE STATION #2 WAS OPENED WITH GREAT FANFARE. IT WAS EXPRESSED MANY TIMES BY PUBLIC OFFICIALS HOW THIS WONDERFUL, PROGRESSIVE PROJECT WAS GOING TO SAVE TAXPAYERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON THEIR HOMEOWNERS PREMIUMS AND HOW IMPORTANT AND HOW USEFUL IN SAVING LIVES AND PROPERTY THIS NEW FACILITY WAS GOING TO BE. THEY WERE RIGHT! JUST ASK ANYONE WHO HAS NEEDED MEDICAL HELP OR AN APT. FIRE EXTINGUISHED SINCE ITS CONSTRUCTION AND HAD HELP ARRIVE IN THREE MINUTES.NOW THAT THE CITY HAS AN EMPTY PIGGY BANK, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE NOT NEEDED?????GET REAL! WE SEE THROUGH THIS SMOKE SCREEN. I CONSIDER THE WORDS IN THE TODAYS PAPER QUOTING OUR CITY LEADERS ABOUT HOW THE STATION WAS BASICALLY BUILT BECAUSE OF ANNEXATION GOALS THAT WERE NEVER ATTAINED AND THEREFORE MAKE THE FIRE STATION PRETTY MUCH UNUSEFUL AND A WASTE OF MONEY, AS JUST ANOTHER FORM OF SLICK TALKING PROPAGANDA TO MINIMIZE AND SWAY THE PUBLIC OPINION AS THEY VOTE TO GET RID OF NEEDED PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES THAT HARD WORKING TAXPAYERS HAVE PAID FOR BUT NOW THE FUNDS HAVE BEEN SPENT ON OTHER UNNECESSARY THINGS! IF THAT SIDE OF MCMINNVILLE WANTS A FIRE STATION WATCHING OVER THEM, THEY HAD BETTER CONTACT THEIR ALDERMAN TODAY OR AT LEAST BE PRESENT AT CITY HALL THURSDAY NIGHT AT 5:30 TO LET THE POLITICIANS KNOW THAT YOU AND YOUR CHILDRENS SAFETY WILL NOT BE COMPRIMISED BECAUSE THEY CAN'T MANAGE THEIR CHECKBOOK. LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU PAID FOR THESE SERVICES AND DEMAND TO KEEP THEM. New man

Nowhere in the Constitution does it give you the right to own pets. If you allow your dog or cat to breed and give away the results...you have no idea what happens to them down the road. Less need for Animal Control means less taxes. Less need for animal control benefits every single person in this county.

Over the last few weeks I've been saddened to learn that somehow this fair city spent more money, than taken in, on new facilities. I read they even are turning the streetlights out on the roads to save money. Interestingly, I am certain the primary job of any city government is not to provide a pool and recreation center and expanded city offices (in the old Regions building, for example) but to provide citizens with security and safe environments. As in providing street lights and police and fire stations. Therefore, given this Truth, turning off street lights is the very last thing I would think the citizens of fair McMinnville would allow their city government to do; not the first. And...is this some strange coincidence there is serious talk about consolidating city and county government (and funds, or lack thereof)? Is combining county resources with a lack of city resources somehow better for the county? I think that makes as much sense as turning street lights off.

The Unions and China approved of his latest request as both shall benefit greatly....400,000 GOVERNMENT JOBS last month - 31,000 private sector jobs...China loves billion dollar interest payments... As for the ones who read this and who receive an annual "tax refund" (50 percent of people who are getting something for nothing tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education.)...your replies fall on deaf ears as you are considered a ZERO LIABILITY VOTER. I realize you will jump for joy when the Bush tax cuts are dead but before you cheer the 1 JAN 2011 date realize this: meaning that the highest federal personal income tax rate will go 39.6% from 35%, the highest federal dividend tax rate pops up to 39.6% from 15%, the capital gains tax rate to 20% from 15%, and the estate tax rate to 55% from zero…..POOR PEOPLE DO NOT EMPLOY PEOPLE...Welcome to 3rd World Status America...Humpty's mission almost accomplished.

I just saw the poll on the need to consider "regulations" to "make" one spray or neuter dogs or cats. The thought immediately occured to me to check and see what country I am living in. I am a free person. One cannot simply pass a "regulation" making me do something to my property. Remember our founding fathers and the stamp tax "regulation"? That's right, "Don't tread on me". More to the point, if my dog has puppies. I will raise the puppies and keep them or give them away to those who want them and can care for them. We need no more anti-liberty regulations because there are already existing laws dealing with animals that must be enforced first. They are those that require pets to be licensed and fed and cared for by their owners and given also that the pet population explosion is not from licensed pets, then making my licensed pet be neutered or spayed against my will, let me say that again, against my will, simply because unlicensed pets are not being responsibly cared for, makes no sense and only sounds good. We are tired of solutions and "regulations" that only sound good and passing a new "regulation" on responsible citizens because existing "regulations" are not enforced on unresponsible citizens who do not take care of their animials offspring makes little sense. But it does "sound good" Don't tread on me...

I've read there is not money to expand chancery road. With a shrinking or steady population and economic decline, not spending money we don't have on a road that is just fine the way it is for now is just fine. If you want to spend money on roads then perhaps fixing that dangerous sparta street underpass would be money well spent. As a new resident, I was driving sparta road from town to the mall on an early and bright summer morning. With the light on that pavement and the faded road lines, it was impossible to see the road turned suddently to go under the RR overpass and so I continued straight narrowly being missed by a minivan coming the other way under the RR overpass. I knew I what was wrong only after crossing into oncoming traffic but amazingly we were not killed. The next thing I knew, a police care stopped me seconds latter to warm that that there had been "many" terrible wrecks here because if one does not live here one does not know the road does this strange and unmarked change of direction, and oh by the way, gave me a $250 dollar ticket rather than appologize for the problem and congratulate me on my luck in evading certain death or life long pain and other horrible things. So...I think after ranting about the dangerous intersection the bottom line is the city should focus on long time critical safety issues rather than nice to haves, like widening the road. Thanks for your time. BTW, I never go down Sparta road ever...guess that makes me a knowing resident now but what about the new residents when the economy gets better and they finally show up "down the road"?

You would probably vote to disband the police force all together, 'cause them lazy cops aren't proactive till I get robbed, then there either just doing their jobs or incompetent depending on the outcome. And you're wrong about the times getting better, the euro is on the verge of failing, Dubai is broke and China's housing bubble will put our sub-prime mort. crisis to shame when it pops. On a final note, way to back you're reasoning on "metro" government, because a metro is an area with a dense population that is centralized with a denser core. Get you're facts straight!

vote No to any form of metro government. vote no to any future alderman who is in the real estate business.. vote no to any alderman who makes a deal in which they will profit by collecting rent from the city.. vote no to any mayor who needs an administrator. Just be more proactive in city government from now on. regardless of what we will possibly be losing now, there is no reason why we should be losing in the future. There will be better times ahead of us and we can make it all happen during election time. Alderman and women with entitlement issues know this and might make good decisions based on what the people want if they realize people do care and will out them if needed..

We can all agree that something needs to be done. That being said, a consolidated city-county government would be viewed as very radical, and it would be hard to rally support for in our fairly conservative community. A more feasible option would be giving the city and county joint control on various programs like: recreation, fire, law enforcement, roads etc. This alone could save millions in the future. When this idea was last brought up in 2000, things were much better. We were as prosperous as ever entering a new millennium and the majority of us had no idea what a recession even was, and couldn't imagine our economy the way it is now. We also had no idea that we were setting ourselves up for failure. If it would have passed, it would have put us on the map for new devoplments. Imagine being a CEO of a rapidly expanding Fort. 500 company, opening the paper, and reading about a small and picturesque town that was leaping forward with a bold and progressive move that would improve everyone's quality of life. Add that to our very low cost of living and friendly-southern atmosphere and you have a prime location for your next factory or two. Passing it could have kept us out of debt even if we didn't gain any major businesses. We need to understand that we can prevent this sad situation from happening again. This time, once again it is in our hands. We have seen what happens when Washington tries to fix things, and now more than ever, we need to realize that it is our turn to change America.

Maybe it is time to rethink the Metro government. That way the city and county would all pay the same taxes and could hopefully work together to make our county a better place and the city would not have to provide all the services and recreation.

Why not have the Mayor's salary and the salary for the aldermen based upon the amount of money in the city piggy bank. The more money in the coffers then the larger the paycheck. Keep spending money and raising taxes and your paycheck will get pretty small. That would be one way to stop all these expenses for surveys.

Submitted By: Submitted: 6/2/2010
How is it going to help the city to raise county taxes? I sincerely hope the city will NEVER be able to get their hands into the county pockets! The best thing to do would be to replace your entire city government, including the city manager. Get off your sofas and GO to meetings, be proactive....every one of you. Do not wait for someone else to do things for you. Run for those offices and actually make a change. You good people can do this!

Submitted By: Submitted: 6/1/2010
Why not form a metropolitan government? If the county and city ran as one, overlapping duties could be cut, things the city has would be extended to the county and we would have a new-found sense of unification in Warren County. There could be vaster fire protection, better police coverage and we would be more attractive as a potential location for new business opportunities. We have heard politicians talk of change in Washington, why shouldn't we have change here?

Dear City Tax Payer (5/29/10) I live in the county and hopefully always will. But you my dear friend have tunnel vision. You are so worried about pool fees that you failed to realize that the city was in the Blue Building (which belonged to the city residents) and you did nothing to ensure its upkeep. Why? And doesn't it take a referendum to be voted upon to sell city property? You let them build a new pool which has been a thorn in the side of city residents ever since construction. You let them take out street lights. You let them put the city in debt with geo-thermal, survey, water tower, survey, main street, survey, farmers market, survey, and probably a survey to look for someone to do surveys. If all county residents boycotted the pool 100% - it would go in the red and close then we could have Gilley trout farm but then you might allow another survey to try and learn if it is within the city charter to make money or a profit. Maybe someone in the county might build a pool and charge admission like county residents $1 with city residents $5 for every child with $7 for every city adult. That wouldn't be fair to the children especially when they want to go so bad on the "Aqua Fall" water slides and through the "Shueter". Imagine how much fun the wee-tots might have in the "Woggy" patch. We need an S.P.C.A. location to cover the entire county. We need employment, we need lower taxes, you need traffic cameras for $, you need more dilligent aldermen, you need aldermen and mayor salary reduced by the percentage of the deficit, and you need people in office to stop trying to make downtown McMinnville a copycat of downtown Franklin. As long as you allow your elected few to have absolute power and do whatever they desire you are going to be getting deeper in debt and have more and more problems. Let the citizens vote on every expenditure and let the city aldermen and mayor do the homework and report to the residents at meetings. Let the voice of the people be loud and clear, "You either do what the people want or it's the highway". Whining about the city pool is the least of your worries at this time - there are much bigger problems running at you from around the corner and because you can't see them you think you're safe. You need a new city government because the one you have is not working for you the people!

Yes as one commenter has stated the civic center is the crown jewel in this city supported by a court of alderman who believe it's there duty to do whatever it takes to keep the civic center kingdom alive. All the while cutting back the knights who protect our city by leaving positions vacant and laying off positions entirely. Let us remember it's not ball fields or basketball courts that save lives and keep us safe. It's not a pool that catches burglars, slows speeders and willing to take a bullet to keep the innocent from harm that keep all safe. It's not a walking trail or pretty red park benches that are waiting ready day and night to come answer the call when your home is on fire and you fear someone may still be inside or maybe it may be a call as simple as lifting you up when you have fallen. Let us all remember what it takes to protect the crown jewels and whatever decisions come about in july let us just remember who made the decisions and for what. I have invested to much into my home to keep a luxury i can do without for awhile just to cut back serious services I shouldn't be without.

Yes, I live in the city and pay city taxes so the county residents(I also pay county taxes, which some county residents seem to forget) can enjoy all the benefits of the city(pool, baseball and soccer fields, riverwalk, civic center, etc). The city aldermen need to realize that the county residents should pay more(and I mean more-yes, $7 to go to the pool) to use any city facility. I will be voting against any alderman in office now-they are not looking out for city residents and don't care what city residents want. Our taxes will be raised so county residents can enjoy the lifestyle they want without paying for it.

I am wondering just where all the money from baseball signups go? We pay $50 dollars per child and $60 if you have one in babe ruth and they get a $3 t shirt and 10 or 12 games if they are lucky. I heard they are paying someone $5000 to schedule umpires. Why do they purchase new equipment? Most kids that play catcher have their own anyway and everyone has to buy pants, hat, glove, socks and cleats and a bat. And why do we have to be affiliated with an organization like Cal Ripken anyway. Let the people who want to have travel teams go to state tournaments. Most kids that play are in it for fun and won't ever make the school teams anyway. If we had an independant league we could play all summer and not have to go by some other places schedule.

ALSO, ANY PERSON THAT IS ON THE BOARD WHO IS IN A POSITION TO VOTE ON A MATTER WHERE HE OR SHE CAN BENEFIT FINANCIALLY,(YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!) SHOULD EXCUSE THEMSELVES FROM VOTING ON THAT MATTER. IF THEY DON'T EXCUSE THEMSELVES, THEN THEY SHOULD BE ASKED TO STEP OUT OF THE ROOM WHILE THAT CERTAIN MATTER IS BEING CONSIDERED. I'm sure if RUTHERFORD was dropped to what an honest worker in Warren County made, he couldnt make it. How about we have a pay cut, lose the city paid cell phones, maybe get rid of a few fancy city vehicles that are not needed and tighten our belts in s more sensible fashion than shutting down a fire dept.

WHOEVER THE alderman ARE TALKING TO CONCERNING INSURANCE ARE APPARENTLY THE TYPE OF INSURANCE PEOPLE THAT PREY OFF IGNORANCE. MY INSURANCE WENT DOWN UPON TELLING MY AGENT OF THE LOWER ISO RATING AND THERE WASNT ANY KIND OF BS STORY. I MADE THEM AWARE AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD ADJUST IT AND IT WOULD SHOW ON MY NEXT STATEMENT. IF YOUR INS AGENT DID NOT, WILL NOT OR EVEN MAKE YOU AWARE YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR LOWER INSURANCE RATES THEN PERHAPS A FEW PEOPLE NEED TO BE SERIOUSLY TALKING WITH THERE AGENTS OR LOOKING ELSEWHERE. alderman ARE EITHER STILL IN THE DARK OR THEY ARE SIMPLY JUST GOING BY THE AGENTS WHO SUIT THERE NEEDS.. AS FOR ME I DO NOT WANT MY INSURANCE GOING BACK UP. IF WE ARE IN A RECESSION AS ONE alderman SO INTELLIGENTLY FINALLY NOTICED THEN PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND THE CITIZENS OF THIS CITY DO NOT SPEND MONEY ON MORFORD STREET OR N. CHANCERY ST OR ANYTHING ELSE WE HAVE LIVED WITHOUT FOR SO LONG IF THERE IS NO MONEY!.. RUTHERFORD IS NOT THE BAD GUY. HE IS SIMPLY MAKING SUGGESTIONS TO THE alderman THAT WILL FACILITATE ALL OF THESE PROJECTS THAT WOULD BE BETTER RECEIVED AND SUITED FOR BETTER TIMES. NOT DURING A RECESSION WHICH BY THE WAY HAS FINALLY COME TO US IN MCMINNVILLE FASHION. WHEN THINGS SEEM TO BE GETTING BETTER ALL AROUND US WERE BEHIND... THANKS alderman PAST, PRESENT.

I just want to Thank all Warren County because I do believe they did their part in supporting Jeremy Brown. The people of WC give yourself a pat on the back. It was so wonderful to see everyone all along the sidelines for his final trip. The flags were a site to see driving through town also. For those of you who didn't get the chance to attend I hope you have a good reason because if it were your son it would make you feel honored to see all the support standing as you passed by giving up your flesh and blood .... I am just a Warren County resident not related to the Brown family just proud of them.!

One way the city could make more money would be to host baseball tournaments at the civic center complex. We have a nice site with shade trees and not concrete like so many other ballparks. I was told we would be hosting the 11-12 yr old Cal Ripken tourney this year and then with cuts to the parks and rec the fields might not get mowed. Also one way to cut expenses would to look at some of the really nice cars and SUVs that the city department supervisors use and take home. Also did the city really have to buy that nice John Deere tractor that just sits on the road side more than it does actually working one without the cab and air conditioning would have pulled those mowers just fine.

Why don't you election whiners go look up the law about the grandfather act and get over the fact that your candidate lost twice...once against Harold Glenn and once against Levie Glenn. The people have spoken quite well as to whom they want in office. Wipe your sniveling nose, wash your faces, take a deep breath, put on your big pants, whatever it takes, and myob! oh Hahaha, so glad to see that you took your comments off that facebook page.

Citizens of McMinnville wake up. It's time to stand up and say NO and if the city fathers don't understand No then say He double hockey sticks NO! We do not have the money for street lights, city workers, parks , or a fire station, BUT we can spend $110,000 for a study to tell us what's wrong? I'll tell you what's wrong for free. Change the people who govern the city. Elect new officials and attend meetings. Let them know what you want in public, not just on this page. Be proactive and vocal, but not whining!(And not violent or ugly)

Ok, the election is over and I know that Matheny will probably keep is staff. However, I am wondering if Levy Glenn will keep the staff that is there or will he hire new people to replace his family memebers. Since he will be in a new position, I don't think the grandfathered in will work for him.

The talk about laying off 8 firefighters and closing station 2.Thats just stupid. When the City Mayor can't do his job so they bring in a guy that use to be a lawyer.Whats the reason why he's not a lawyer now. I wounder is it because he wasn't making enough money so he came here. Rumor has been said that Mr.Rutheford got a healthy raise this year and now they want to hire a Cookeville Based firm for $110,000 to tell the City Officials what we need to do to make the City more attractive sounds to me some City Officials don't know how to do there JOB. Then I found out that the city paid to move this Rutheford guy up here. What about some city employees getting a truck to drive back and forward to work on tax payers money and wanting to up grade the civic center. The City Officials paid alot of money for the street lights and now they want to pay for them to be taken down whats up with that. Then the road up town its so rough that I have seen gravel roads smoother. There is alot of money thats been dished out that needs to be refigured and its time to start standing up for whats right.

As I went down Smithville Hwy last night and saw all the flags and the huge one waving in support and honor of one of our young hometown soldiers my heart was filled with pride to live and work in such a community. My heart goes out to the Brown family and friends over their devastating loss. Your son was a courageous young man and hero in my book. You are in my prayers. God bless you and God bless America.

Word around town now is that the War Protesters are going to be at the young soldier's funeral tomorrow. As the mother and grandmother of three who now are fighting for our freedom, I think it is a shame and a disgrace to this fallen young man and his family for anyone to cause a scene such as this at his funeral. We all need to support them and be thankful that there are still those who will give their lives so that the rest of us can enjoy our freedom.

Why don't we all get together and look at Mr. Rutheford's contract. Maybe we could do with less of his time. I'd rather have the firemen on the job than have his services! And how do you know they were "on the clock" when they were on Facebook? Do they clock in/out on breaks and lunch? They do get breaks and lunch?

I felt compelled to respond to your article in regards to fire personnel who were on the computer while on duty for 24 hours. The way I see it, the city administator says that it wasn't what the employees said...it's when they said it. Of course what they said just happens to be on a website speaking out against city leaders and wastes of money. How coincidental. Also, if reprimands were coming because they were using their computers on the clock, even when the fire chief said they were permiitted to , sounds well ....how do you say it...wrong!!!!!!!!!

If an employee is allowed a laptop at work how can they be reprimanded for being on the Internet. Is it because they posted something that the boss didn't agree with?

Your City Employee of The Year/ City Administrator is just doing his job proposing the elimation of fire Station 2. But I suspect there is more to it than saving money. Someone in the fire department there must have got on his list. He should know better than to mess with the fire departments. popularity

After years of dealing with legal concerns with city govt, it appears to me that city employees just may have a recent need of legal representation.Nobody enjoys being treated like a lying Judas.Even lawyers! The Tennessee Supreme Courts' services may be required before this freedom of speech situation is clarified . Deep pockets will be needed.

I can not believe that the city would actually even consider closing fire station 2. Look at all of the population that station covers. Not counting the apartment complexes, nursing homes, businesses, etc. The city keeps saying they want new businesses to come to this city, but why would they with the kind of fire coverage that is being proposed. Not only does it effect fire coverage, it also effects medical coverage to an extent. First of all, fire station 2 houses the busiest ambulance out of all of the ambulance service substations. Because of this, there are many times that this ambulance may have to come across town to a call, because it may have just finished with a previous 911 call. In these instances, fire station 2 first responders respond to 911 calls and are able to initiate care. These firemen/first responders SAVE LIVES!!!! Whether it be pulling a person from a burning building, or first responding. You must remember the apt fire just last year that claimed the lives of 2 young children. Do you really want a fire truck to have to come all the way across town to these apts that are just a mile from fire station 2. What kind of chance of survival does that leave for someone in a fire? There have been so many occasions that we, EMS, have to rely on the first responders for help with patients. When you have someone that is having CPR performed on them and they weigh 300+ pounds and are on the top flight of an apt complex, YOU NEED HELP. Who are you gonna call if you have no first responders? I do not think anyone outside of fire and ems realize just how much we need these firefighters. They do so much more than the general public and administration realize. Remember, You never know what you had, till it's gone. We can not afford to lose this fire station. Just how much is a life worth? What if it was your mom, dad, son, or daughter that is laying there needing help. Would you want someone that is a mile away or do you want to wait on someone to come across town? Please contact your city officials and let them know that we will not stand for our fire station 2 being closed. We've lost some good people in our community over the last few weeks plus a young soldier who will never reach his full potential and all that life has to offer...War's are not fought nor won by political parties. How about when your with your family and friends this Memorial Day weekend...how about taking 5 minutes to think about what this day is truly about and the countless lives lost in defense of our nation.....No matter how many times I hear it Taps still makes me cry.
