Fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life

A new fundraiser called Dancing With Our Stars Country Style will be held Oct. 22 at Bridgestone Learning Center. The event begins at 6 p.m. and proceeds will benefit Warren County Relay for Life.
The evening will feature local teams who will be dancing for donations. Two winning couples will receive trophies — the couple which raises the most money through donations, and the couple chosen as People’s Choice. All proceeds raised will benefit Relay for Life.
Currently signed up to dance are the teams of John and Rhonda Pelham, Randy England and Ashley Wright, Trent Gribble and Melanie Turner, Bill Zechman and Bliss Zechman, Rob and Teri Nunley, and Vann and Elaine Lawson. Ryan Moore, whose partner is yet to be announced, has also agreed to dance.
Prior to the event, couples will be accepting donations. Also, a website has been established at curtistown.com listing all the teams and how to vote/ donate for one to win.
The dancing event is sponsored by the Curtis Relay Team, of which Elaine Curtis Lawson is co-captain.
“I wanted to help bring more attention to local Relay efforts and create a large event in the fall,” said Elaine. “It has not been easy to pull this together, but it has been worth it.”
Along with being manager of the local Pizza Hut, Elaine is a cancer survivor whose life has been touched more than once by the disease through friends and family members.
Dancing With Our Stars will consist of three phases — dinner, live auction and dance competition. The auction will occur during dinner. The dance competition will be held after dinner.
Each dance couple will have an introduction and then dance to the song they have chosen with a routine they have created. While the whole community is encouraged to donate for the couple they want to win prior to the event, People’s Choice will be voted on by event attendees only.
There are many Relay teams in Warren County sponsoring fundraisers. However, Darryl Curtis, captain of Curtistown Youth Team, says this dancing-for-donations event is unique.
“This is the first of its kind locally,” Curtis said. “We were looking for a new, fun way to raise money and get local personalities involved.”
Couples have been taking dance lessons from Steve and Bonnie Davis two nights a week.
“The object is to have fun while raising money,” said Curtis. “The contestants learn basic dance steps and have a short time to pull together a routine of their own. Some of our dancers have previous experience dancing, while others have never danced before. They are so brave to do something like this for such a worthy cause.”
The Oct. 22 event will have limited seating. Admission is $25 per individual. Tickets are on sale now. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. A dinner and auction will begin at 6 p.m., with dancing to commence at 8 p.m.
“By attending Dancing with Our Stars you will be supporting the local Relay for Life, helping to fight the battle against cancer and having a great time watching local personalities kick it up,” said Curtis.
