Perfect ending

Perfection on the basketball court is rarely ever attained, but the Boyd Lady Broncos set out this season to dominate the Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference and the team did just that.
Boyd finished the regular season 15-0 in the MTAC by defeating Christian Community 54-40 Friday night.
As the Lady Broncos pursued perfection, the program also honored its four seniors along the way. Marisa Hillis, Ashley Newby, Bailey Gilliam and Rachel Campbell played their final game in J.K. Stanley Gymnasium and the Lady Bronco seniors made sure it was a memorable one.
Hillis scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a season-best 16 rebounds as she led the Lady Broncos to a big win.
Hillis took over in the second half after the Lady Broncos had trouble putting away their opponent in the first 16 minutes.
Boyd, which has won most of its 15 games by double figures, led 23-21 at halftime behind 10 first-half points from eighth-grader Rhiannon Hoover.
Hillis helped the Lady Broncos pull away by dominating the paint. Hillis scored 11 points in the third period, including a three-point play that put Boyd ahead by 10. By the time Hoover added her second 3-pointer of the contest, the Lady Broncos had built a 41-26 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Broncos got two baskets by Gilliam in the final period as the team was able to complete its perfect season.
Coach Donna Newby, whose daughter Ashley was honored after the game on Senior Night, set a goal in place before the season to be perfect and was glad her team took the challenge and accomplished it.
“I knew we should be the top team in our conference and we wanted to win every game,” said Newby. “It was our goal and we reached it. We have to continue it now in the tournament.”
Hillis echoed the sentiments of her coach after having the best game of her career.
“Our team decided before the season this was what we wanted to do. We wanted to be the best and knew we could do it,” said Hillis. “Once we decided we wanted to be perfect, we worked as a team to accomplish it.”
Closing out their careers with a perfect season was something coach Newby thought was fitting for her four seniors. As a parent and coach, Newby couldn’t be prouder of the development the Lady Broncos made.
“I’ve been with these girls and I’ve watched them grow into great young women,” said Newby. “What stands out is their character. Whether we win or lose - and we’ve lost plenty before - these girls handled themselves well. Their character is what really stands out.”
Hoover finished with 15 points as the eighth-grader has made a huge impact this season. Gilliam finished with six, followed by Newby with five and Brea Moody with four. Madison Todd and Sammye Jo Medley tallied two points apiece while Ashley Kiefer rounded out scoring with one point.
The Lady Broncos will enter this week’s MTAC tournament at Currey Ingram High School as the No. 1 seed.
