Lady Broncos gallop to title

Dibrell proved to be pesky, but the Boyd Lady Broncos never lost their swagger in the 7-8 grade county championship Monday night.
Boyd showed the poise of a team that hasn’t lost all season as the Lady Broncos captured a 38-27 victory and the county crown at WCHS.
Boyd post Anna Bain pounded the glass in scoring a game-high 14 points, while flashy guard and tournament MVP Rhiannon Hoover added 11.
“We were more inside tonight than outside because their defense was pulled back to stop the 3,” said Boyd coach Greta Hoover. “To win the county tournament and go 19-0, this is an exciting time for us. I’m proud of the girls and the way they play together as a team.”
The Lady Broncos will continue their season this weekend in the TNT State Tournament. Boyd plays Saturday at 9 a.m. at Springfield Middle School.
For Dibrell, Rachel Johnson, Erin Cantrell, and Sianna Womack all scored six.
Boyd tried to shake free from Dibrell all game, but the Lady Wildcats managed to find answers at just the right time to keep it close.
Boyd jumped out to a 10-4 lead early in the second quarter, but Dibrell battled right back. Womack scored from the post and Bailey Barrett got behind the defense to score a basket in transition and cut the Boyd lead to 12-9.
When the Lady Broncos forged ahead 17-9, Dibrell battled back behind two 3-pointers from Cantrell to make it 17-15.
The difference down the stretch was Boyd was able to find more offensive consistency from its go-to girls when Dibrell’s offense lost some punch. Bain was fierce under the rim and Hoover was steady handling the ball.
Hoover drained a 3-pointer in the third quarter, and Bain followed with a putback. Then Boyd finally managed a little wiggle room when Hoover drove the baseline for a layup to give the Lady Broncos a 30-22 lead after three quarters.
Dibrell cut it to 30-24 on two Womack free throws to start the fourth quarter and the Lady Wildcats had chances to make more of a dent but couldn’t get their shots to fall.
Given an opening, the Lady Broncos galloped away. Boyd’s Morgan Deweese scored on a 7-foot jumper off an effective inbounds play to make it 32-24.
Hoover then created offense off the dribble. She drove inside and passed to Bain for a layup, then made a steal and scored on a fast break to make it 36-24 midway through the fourth.
The 12-point deficit was too much for Dibrell to overcome.
Other Boyd scorers were Deweese with six, McKenzie Pistole with five, and Ashley Kiefer with two.
Other Dibrell scorers were Barrett with five, Allie Winkler with three, and Brianna Young with one.
