Howard, 72, killed in collision

A local man died Friday morning from injuries he suffered when he pulled in front of a semi Thursday night in Moore County.
The man, Jim Howard, 72, passed away early Friday morning at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after treatment there for injuries he sustained in the crash. He was airlifted to the facility from the scene.
According to a preliminary highway patrol report, the accident happened at 6:38 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Highway 55 and Highway 82 in Moore County near Lynchburg.
Investigators say Joshua Melton of Winchester was traveling westbound on Highway 55 in a 2003 Volvo semi truck. The truck was being driven without a trailer attached. Melton escaped injury.
Meanwhile Howard was heading southbound in a Jeep Wrangler on Highway 82 when he pulled into the path of the oncoming semi. The vehicles collided in the intersection of the two highways. Investigators aren’t sure what could have prompted Howard to pull in front of the oncoming truck.
Howard was the husband of longtime Southern Standard lifestyle editor Janice Howard.
