Warren County starts district play tonight

There will be no shortage of motivation for the Warren County High School basketball teams when the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers begin District 6-AAA play tonight against Coffee County.
The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders each have been a source of pain and frustration for the Warren County teams over the years, something coaches Malcolm Montgomery and Erick Baird hope to rectify starting at 6 p.m. tonight at Charlie Dalton Gym.
The last time coach Montgomery watched his Pioneers take on the Red Raiders, Coffee County pulled an upset in the District 6-AAA tournament and ended Warren County’s season.
The Pioneers had beaten Coffee County eight straight times before last year’s tournament matchup at Cumberland County Gym, but the Red Raiders won 53-50 to send the Pioneers home before the regional tournament for the first time under coach Montgomery.
The loss hasn’t been forgotten by members of the Pioneers, especially seniors Tucker Smith, Nick Simmons and Kendall Rutledge. All three played in last year’s tournament game and are hopeful to get back to their winning ways over Coffee County.
While the Pioneers have had a long history of beating the Red Raiders, the Lady Pioneers are hoping to snap a nearly decade-long losing streak to Coffee County.
Coach Baird is well aware he hasn’t beaten the Lady Raiders since his arrival before the 2009-10 season. Warren County has lost seven straight games since then, including a loss in the District 6-AAA tournament finals two years ago.
Baird believes the losing streak to the Lady Raiders dates back even further, 2003 to be exact. Warren County will need a special effort to snap the streak tonight.
While Warren County enters the game 12-8 and Coffee County is 6-9, the Lady Raiders have a veteran squad coming to Charlie Dalton Gym.
The Lady Raiders start four seniors and one junior while coach Baird counts on sophomores Bri Melton and Brittany Myers as the Lady Pioneers’ leading scorers.
Tonight’s action is set to begin at 6 p.m. with the girls game. The boys game will follow and is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
