WCMS beats White County

On Nov. 8, White County Middle School handed the Warren County Middle School Pioneers their first loss of the season. Coach Adam Wood and his team returned the favor Tuesday night.
The Pioneers handed White County its first loss of the season, winning 35-25 in front of a packed gym at Warren County Middle School.
Warren County (6-4) had 35 days to think about its 25-21 loss in Sparta, one that continued White County’s long winning streak over WCMS.
Coach Adam Wood, in his second year as the leader of the Pioneers, had never beaten White County and he wanted it to change Thursday. A big addition to the Warren County roster made it possible.
The lone roster change by the two squads between meetings was Warren County’s inclusion of Coffee County transfer Isaiah Blanton in the rotation, who led the Pioneers to victory Thursday.
Blanton scored a game-high 12 points as Warren County survived a slow start to beat the best team in the Central Tennessee Conference.
The Pioneers fell behind 10-5 after the first quarter, but Blanton fueled a big run to start the second period.
Blanton started the second quarter with a jumper from the left wing, which ignited an 11-2 run. Post Krojhn Calbert scored on two layups during the span and Blanton capped it with a three-point play to make it 16-12 in favor of the Pioneers.
White County cut the lead in half with a shot before the buzzer, but the Pioneers kept the momentum going in the third quarter.
Logan Wilson started the second half with the Pioneers’ first 3-pointer, putting Warren County ahead 19-14. Calbert added three points in the period and Blanton drilled a jumper as the Pioneers pushed their lead to eight entering the fourth quarter.
Blanton capped his brilliant performance against White County with a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter, a shot that put the Pioneers ahead by double digits for good.
Point guard Isaac Golden made sure the Warren County lead would hold up by scoring six points down the stretch as Warren County won by 10.
Calbert finished with nine points, followed by Golden with six, Wilson with five, Brendon Breedlove with two and Joelah Solomon with one.
While the Pioneers got their revenge Thursday night, the Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneers couldn’t complete a sweep against White County. The Lady Pioneers lost at home 28-25, falling to 7-3 this season.
Madison Mason, who scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Pioneers, had a shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, but her leaner from the right wing bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
Elsa Eckenrod had 10 points for Warren County while Tatum Young added a third-quarter free throw.
The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers will play their final game before Christmas break at DeKalb County tomorrow. Games are scheduled to start at noon.
