Centertown, Morrison win

With the 5-6 grade elementary girls tournament starting at Eastside Elementary School Tuesday night, four teams took the court knowing it could be their last game of the year.
The Morrison Lady Eagles and Centertown Lady Warriors survived and advanced, while the Eastside Lady Bulldogs and Irving College Lady Tigers saw their season end with a loss in the tournament.
Morrison eliminated Eastside with a 16-7 victory and Centertown moved on by beating Irving College 27-22.
The Lady Eagles used a stingy defense and 10 points from Addyson Crouch to beat the Lady Bulldogs.
Morrison allowed Eastside only three baskets, two less than Crouch had for the Lady Eagles.
Morrison pitched a shutout in the first quarter to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Crouch provided most of the offensive highlights in the first six minutes as she scored four points for the Lady Eagles. Grace Badger added a basket to the Morrison total.
It was Eastside’s turn to get defensive in the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the second period while Kapri Talley scored the team’s first point on a free throw. McKenna Mason added a layup to cut the lead in half before halftime.
Baskets by Crouch and Riley Desmarais pushed the Morrison advantage to 10-3 in the third quarter, but Talley scored late in the period to make it 10-5.
Crouch put the game away with four points in the final period while Macy Harrell sank a layup. Eastside got a bucket from Mason, but missed free throws were costly for the Lady Bulldogs. Eastside missed five free throws in the final quarter and went 1-for-24 at the charity stripe in the game.
Offense wasn’t as hard to come by when Centertown took the court against Irving College.
Behind eight points each from Raeleigh Moore and Macie Walker, the Lady Warriors beat the Lady Tigers by five.
Centertown needed every point its top duo could provide to hold off Irving College and star Lady Tiger forward Caylie Sherrell.
Sherrell scored a game-high 12 points for the Lady Tigers, but it wasn’t enough as the team couldn’t rally to win in the final period.
Page Duke added five points for Centertown, including baskets in the first and fourth quarters. Beth Vaughn scored all four of her points in the second half while Drew Davis’ bucket came in the second quarter.
Hannah Lee had six points for Irving College and Emily Fults added four.
Morrison and Centertown will be back in action tonight in the girls elementary tournament. Centertown will take on the Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneers at 4 p.m. and Morrison will face last night’s winner between Dibrell and Boyd at 6:30 p.m.
The tournament finals are scheduled to be played at 12:30 p.m. A consolation game will be played at 10 a.m.
