Mayor says Ken Smith his top choice

McMinnville officials will be meeting Tuesday night to consider filling the unexpired alderman term on the board and to hear appointments to committees.
Mayor Jimmy Haley has confirmed rumors Ken Smith is high on his list of candidates to fill his vacant alderman spot on the board.
“He’s one of my favorites,” said Haley.
To the question of why he likes Smith, Haley stated, “He’s a fresh face. He’s someone new to politics. His parents were involved in business and government. He’s fairly conservative in his ideas and he’s level headed. He’s got a strong background in finance.”
While any member of the board can nominate candidates, it requires a majority vote of the board to get the position. In this case, that’s four votes. Haley says he has a list of four other candidates for the board to consider if Smith is not given the nod.
“I think Ken would be an asset to the board, but it’s up to the board to decide. I don’t know if anyone else on the board will make a nomination, but I have a list of five people that I have strongly looked into. They are all qualified and they all bring something to the board that we could use to move us forward in a positive way.”
While board members can consider personal and educational qualities in making their selection, the individual must meet the legal requirements of residency, age and being a registered voter.
Once the individual is selected and takes the oath of office, Haley will begin handing out committee assignments. While the list is set, Haley says last-minute adjustments may be necessary.
“I’ve pretty much got the committees set, but a lot depends on who is named as my replacement,” said Haley. “I may have to make some changes.”
Speculation has it Smith will be named chairman of the Finance Committee if he gets the open position. He is a banker at Security Federal who previously worked at City Bank.
When questioned about the possibility, Haley stated, “Could be. We will have to wait and see.”
The regular session of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen begins at 7 p.m. and is held on the second floor of city hall.
