Furry stocking stuffer

Anticipating a special guest in December?
Move away from the chimney and check out a new program called Santa Paws that could have just what you need.
The inaugural Santa Paws will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Three Star Mall by Warren County Animal Control. Dogs, cats and kittens will be on hand and ready for adoption.
“We wanted to offer this event to encourage adoptions, to raise awareness about the importance of spay and neuter, and to raise funds for vets bills,” said Warren County Animal Control director Kim Pettrey.
Offered will be a pet fashion show at 11 a.m. featuring some of the animals, on-site pet adoptions, spay/ neuter awareness materials, a bake sale, a pet treats sale, and silent auction that will have several items including a hand-sewn cat quilt crafted and donated by Betty Newsome.
Special guests will include four-legged visitors provided by Linda Coursey from Viola Valley Dog Rescue and Jamie Wheeler of Kastaway Kitties Cat Rescue and Sad Eyes Urgent Rescue. Funds raised will be divided among Coursey, Wheeler and Pettrey to be used for the care of animals.
Special doggy guest will be Miracle Baylie, the dog that was found walking on its hind legs with injuries to its front legs. The dog is under the treatment of Dr. Sam Young who was able to save one leg.
“Miracle is still at the vet,” said Pettrey. “She is such a wonderful dog. She’s a joy to be around. She sometimes forgets she can use that third leg, so she will still stand up on her hind legs and walk.”
A prosthetic will be made for her to use in place of the missing leg. Once her rehabilitation is complete, a suitable home will be found with owners who can handle her special needs.
The event is sponsored by Three Star Mall and Warren County Animal Control. Adoptions can be made on site. For more information, call animal control at 507-3647.
